Salmon Hole 9/24

Post by Matt »

Was too exhausted to post this yesterday, so here goes.

Wasn't planning on going down because of the rain we were supposed to get all day, but things seemed to clear up a bit by around 7, so Randy and I left then and got down there shortly after 7. We both started out using Rapala's and spinners, no hits. Went to crawlers, SM's galore yet again. I tried my usual setups, Berkley Steelhead worms, 3" Smelt, etc etc..

Randy was gone by 11, we got rained on for a little while I was pretty wet but decided to stay down as usual. 2 hours and a few showers later, I was finally hooked up! Another Steelhead on a crawler this time, the usual 18" or so, put up a great fight! Smart guy broke my line after I netted him, sinkers got tangled...took the hook out and sent him on his way, such a great feeling to watch them swim away.

Made all of that rain worth it :D

After that I didn't feel like staying, had half a dozen teens fishing off the point that were bound to flock towards me after seeing me catch SM after SM and then that Steelhead, and then 4 guys came out to the point and fished right in front of me, so I was generous and let them have the point, hopefully they hooked up as well. Off the water by 1ish

Didn't go down this morning...too tired, sore, and it was going to be a hot day. Got an itch to go around 5, had my girlfriend drop me off and I fished until dark. The usual invasion of Smallies, and a huge Redhorse that got off near the rock. On my way up, I checked the trap and could hear fish in there, so I shined my flashlight through the mesh guard and a huge male popped his head right out of the water and rubbed against the mesh with his nose, he was huge! After that I turned around and saw 4-5 Rabbits behind me, hopping along the concrete near the trap, what the?

Water temp is getting up there at 68...this hot weather doesn't look too good for fishing. Going to hold off on the Hole until it gets back down..probably this upcoming weekend. Total Salmon trapped are already in the 160's, probably not including the dozen or so in the holding tank, along with a BIG Steelhead in there with them.

Thanks for the update. Numbers are already in the 160's, thats great news, it's not even October yet. I'm planning on getting up there in the morning, my next day off isn't until Oct 7.

The steelies fight better then the salmon this time of year. The bigger tribs here in N.Y are regulated up the wazobie - most everything your using would be illegal over here in N.Y. We have to use unweighted natural bait or fly gear with unweighted flies.

Congrats on the fish!!!
Salmon, the other pink meat.

Beautiful looking steelie Matt...
How big do you think the one in the holding tank was?
Catch and serve with lemon.

It was dark, but I saw the side of him and it looked like he was real chunky...depending on the length 3-6 lbs?
