Sunday fishing, Appletree point, Willsboro

Post by Vtfishinglady »

Hi all,
A couple more salmon today and another one lost at the alter. We caught our first 15" salmon over in front of Appletree point in the same spot we caught others yesterday, but then it seemed to die off. So we decided to explore across the lake. We started at Brown point and went into the bay going along the north west side. We caught another Salmon around 1/2 way into the bay, again, around 15", so back it went. Then we turned around and headed back out of the bay and towards brown's point and then across Corlear bay. About 1/2 way across Corlear bay we hooked another one and brought it to the surface, and to our surprise it was the biggest so far, maybe 20" but fairly skinny and it had a lamprey on it (first one we've seen). And it was pretty lethargic there on the surface after it was pulled up and as Chris went to grab it, it seemed to spit the lure out and say good bye. A big disappointment because Chris really wanted a keeper. I thought this fish looked too small to keep, even at 20" because it was skinny. Since we didn't get it out of the water, it could have been a different kind of fish, but it was silver! We continued to troll past Schuyler and to the mouths of the Ausable rivers (in 100' water) but it was really getting warm and my surface sensor was telling me the surface was 78 degrees.. Today, nothing would take my red-hot lure from yesterday, and everything was biting on the Green, pink and brass (rainbow maybe?) spotted spoon Chris was using. And just like yesterday, around 50' deep at 2.6 to 2.8mph. Nothing was biting deeper, and nothing shallower. 70' gave us 59 degrees but nothing would bite down there. Not sure I really understand this, but it is what it is.

The other thing is we're getting a good number of tripped dipsies and some short initial fight and no fish! I'd say for every fish we land we're getting 3-4 that seem to hook and then disappear. Don't know if they're perch or Salmon, but we didn't catch a lot of perch today.

So how do you tell the difference between white fish, Ciscoes and Salmon? I tried looking at pictures on-line while out in the boat and the Ciscoes seem to have a very forked tail (which the fish we've caught don't have). The indicator we've been using is the color, tail and the tops seem a bit greenish. But maybe we should focus on the mouth. Now I wonder if some of those fish are something else??
