Salmon Hole 9/21

Post by Matt »

I thought I had to work today, but I just HAD to try out my new Fenwick rod....so I walked down to the Hole at 5:45. Got there at 6, still dark out, couldn't even fish yet, haha! Waited until about 6:15 ish to walk across to the point to start fishing...fish were rolling EVERYWHERE for a solid 20 minutes straight, most looked like Suckers, but others looked like SM running from those angry Salmon. Also got to see two Cranes flying around eachother like they were going to fight, then they turned on the Seagulls and started chasing them away! I got a good laugh out of it, what a great start to the day! Tried everything I had, only a few little SM...had to leave by 9 to get ready for work. Get a phone call right as I'm leaving for work around 11, it's a friend from work wanting to take my shift for the day. How can I turn that down? Took a powernap, and was back to the Hole by 1. Started off with little SM's hammering my crawlers, and even my 3" Gulps! At least 20 SM later, I was hooked up to a nice FAT little Steelhead who apparently thought he could fly, judging by the way he launched himself out of the water a half dozen times!

He's so wide it looks like a White Perch doesn't it?! I tried getting video of him swimming out of my net, but it just didn't work out well, solo video recording is tough when you're on the edge of a rock with the phone in one hand and the net in the other...so I'll have to work on that.

Shortly after a fellow angler arrived, an old friend of Randy's. We fished side by side for a while with no results, so he decided to hop the fence and fish under the falls. Sure enough, 10 minutes after he'd gone down, he was hooked into what I think was a Steelhead, I wasn't close enough to tell. It looked like a real nice sized fish, around the 20" range. After that I was joined via the Burlington side rockpile by a fellow angler throwing a spinner, who told me he could see a tagged Salmon holding in the water about 10 feet in front of him, a nice 22" fish. He threw spinner after spinner right towards it, no takes, darn! After only about 40 minutes, he was off and so was I...

Checked the trapping board before I left, 74 Salmon trapped so far this year, and only ONE Steelhead...even though I've landed I think 5 already this year, weird..I'll be fishing the Hole for the next 4 days straight since I have work off, and so does Randy. Look for more reports coming probably tomorrow, thanks for reading!

I've spent a little time at the Hole the last week, but no Salmon or Steelie? What did you catch him on?

This time a crawler drifted through, but I've got them on Berkley Steelhead Powerbait worm and 3" Gulp! Smelt this year too.

No luck today, but I did hook into something BIG on a Gulp minnow right after I had gotten there...hooked for a few seconds, felt some wide head shaking and then it was off. Later in the day, Randy was in a different spot, he called me over and pointed in the water....at least a dozen Steelhead/Salmon swimming back and forth near the rock we were standing on..CRAZY! Some of them looked like they were pushing 30"...just massive fish. We threw out crawlers, spoons, Rapala's, flies...no takes. Then I tossed in a Berkley Steelhead worm, let it sink to the bottom and flutter in the current...I set my rod down to change lures on my other rod, I look over and the rod is bent right over...as soon as I grabbed it, the fish let go....UGH!

Matt

Just love reading your reports, it's kinda of like a novel and each day is a different chapter.

Thanks! I enjoy writing them as much as some people do reading. I love reading other peoples stories and relating to them, so I try to do the same. Some people dislike sharing secrets and locations which is totally understandable, but for some reason I love sharing info, knowing that someone may use it someday to catch a nice fish makes me feel warm inside. :D
