Good news for US residents crossing the Can. border

Post by Wallyandre (Andre) »

Good news for the Canadian business and good news for the US residents:

I doubt that the US gov. will do the same for the Canadian resident:

I just want to fish without having to worry about getting my boat confiscated if I cross into canadian waters and not having called a port of entry. I'm not intending to buy a canadian license and will just stay on the US side. I know its a few bad apples that have ruined it for us honest fisherman. Canada has to do what they have to and I don't blame them.

Frank my advice is to make that call if you cross the border. If you're anywhere near the border, you best know where it is and that goes for returning back to the states. As you know, my son is Coastie and he works closely with the border patrols and all law enforcement; they will all frown on you crossing in either direction without notification. You may not see them before they see you! Their new high tech survellience equipment is amazing! There are some grey areas and regulations with border crossings; but the laws do really say you must report.

That new rule really does little for most law abiding US citizens as it don't make the crossing easier. It now just permits some people to cross the border into Canada such as people with a DWI. Prior to the change, if you had a DWI conviction or some other minor conviction and really never served a jail or prison sentence, you would be turned away from the border.

It is amazing how many times my son has done a vessel check including recreational boaters and commercial vessels of boats that have crossed the US border and he has stopped them and then finds someone aboard with a felony conviction. Those individuals end up arrested and are turned over to the boarder patrol. They are not permitted to enter the USA. Many times that are also drug related convictions and most likely up to smuggling again.

As for the water they are working on something that looks like the old rule: if you don't touch ground and if you don't stop or anchor you won't to report by phone but you must have all the request documents in case you are board. For the fishing tournament it seems it's something done: no call
if you had a DWI conviction or some other minor conviction and really never served a jail or prison sentence, you would be turned away from the border.
Same for a Canadian resident if he is ask about a criminal record if he has a DUI he needs to say yes and the US custom officer can refuse access to the USA. I think they are a little to strict but what can we do? I have 2 friends that are not coming with me because of DUI many many years ago

Thanks Walt, you're always good advise on that subject.
