A day well spent!

Post by TUnamas »

Sunday I was invited to join a co-worker and his young son, Will, aboard another friend's boat as a "special guest". Will has caught the fishing bug and he wanted to catch his first pike. He wanted me aboard because though I'd only met him once, he deemed me "very fishy." I assured him that our Captain would have us dialed in and we wouldn't need much luck, though I was invited aboard like a key chain rabbit's foot. We left the dock at 8 am grateful the weather was better than forecast. Will plays hockey, but I'd warned his Dad to dress him warmer than he wanted to be for a wet and windy Frostbite day. We made a quick 10 minute run to find a lee from the wind in shallower water and started to deploy lines. The first plug was taken from my hands as I set it towards the port side board. "Will! You're up!" I yelled into the wind even though he hadn't even had his first donut. Captain screamed: "REEL REEL REEL!" 3 Minutes in and Will had his first pike and targeted accomplishment. Dad was satisfied; he just wanted Will to get his first pike. Then Will said, "How about 15?" 4 hours later, we had 11 pike and 3 post spawn lakers. Will had reeled in 13 of the 14 fish but I had to assist with a laker when we doubled and Will was already hooked into a pike. One more to go. Will dropped the next two to pulled hooks and it started to snow and blow. Then it happened. Biggest pike of the day but Will was now an experienced pike angler! In the net. 15 and we pulled lines and headed home across the bay, several Master Angler fish for Will and a huge post spawn laker in the mix and seared into his memory. What a special day showing a new young angler what a great day can be. It was Frostbite fishing with friends and a young son on an epic outing father and son will remember forever. Kudos to Thorny and Cathy Jean for making it happen, I really enjoyed my time on the back deck with Thorny on a day Will won't forget. We all told stories about fishing with our own fathers long ago as kids. Yesterday, I was just happy to be there!

Sounds like an epic day, TUnamas! Thorny sure has the late fall pike bite dialed in.
