Mexico Bay, 8/20-8/23

Post by Crayfish »

Fished Mexico Bay out of the Salmon River with a buddy of mine last week. Short trip due to weather that came in on Sunday and was going to blow all week. Had a blast, though.

I got there early afternoon on Wednesday. The wind was blowing hard out of the SE but we were able to fish close to shore. Surface temp was 53deg! We went 1 for 3, landing a nice fat Coho in 25ft of water.

The wind and temp settled down for the next 3 days and we were able to fish every day. We ended up with around 50 bites, landing around 30 salmon. We caught some really nice Coho in the 10-14lb range, 3 Kings around 20lbs, several kings from 10-18lbs, all capped off with a giant 28lb King! What a beast and it gave us a workout to get him in the boat!

Wind picked up on Sunday and was predicted to blow all week, so I headed home. What a fun few days we had.

One thing to note was that there were a ton of 2-3lb Kings around. I've never seen so many. Also, meat out produced everything else, but the big guy came on a spoon. Go figure.

Till next time!

I wish I'd measured it. My biggest is 30lbs, so it was knocking on the door!

Thanks!

Thanks, Jason. I wish I had joined the derby!

How have you made out lately? Once the temp settles after this week, the fish should show up ready to run. We had our best luck north in front of Sandy Pond and the north dunes.

"New spot, new enthusiasm!" was always one of our mantras on out of state hunting trips. Hopefully that is true for you, as well. The summer fishing should be a lot more consistent I would think.

Good luck for the rest of the year!
