Took advantage of the first nice day before my 79th. BD and went out on Memphremagog trolling for Salmon or Lakers. Still getting dialed-in on the electronics.
On the Lowrance Hook 7 this was the screen displayed as I went over one of the few deeper spots. Are these upside-down Vs fish or what? My Hummingbird, on my other boat is set up to show fish symbols (large/medium/small and an alarm beep). Not seeing a clear V with nothing below it, is this bottom junk?
Latter I did land two fish same size and weight. Both 20" and 3 lbs. Yes one Salmon (real nice fight and three jumps) and a small-mouth bass.
Still getting dialed-in.
Thanks, Speedy

Re: Help me Read the screen-please
Looks like small bait piles with a couple salmon over em to me. Fish ID is like watching a cartoon. You want that off so you can see the fish and bait as they really look.
The arches are there because of the way the sonar works on leading and trailing edge of the mark. That is normal.
Nice results. Fish pics?

Thanks for the tips Matt!! All these years I have had mine on fish ID setting and when the bite is slow and I get to messing with the menu and have yet to find the one specific for salmon, and the cartoon caricatures all look the same! No wonder I catch white perch and other species while targeting just salmon!!
On a serious note the first time Matt fished with me aboard my Mistress he was looking at my plotter and the screen was covered with MOB symbols, you know the little man with his arms out, and I could sense a bit of curiosity (and perhaps concern) as to why I had so many and he finally outright asked about them. I told him that was my go to for marking a bite or big bait balls, and NOT for marking actual people falling off the Mistress. He promptly showed me all I needed to do was hit enter twice to mark a spot and proceeded to scroll through the menu showing me how I use different Icons for different things and my eyes started to glaze over. Some of us just don't have the patience for figuring out electronic gadgets
I think I will change my settings from Fish ID to sonar the next trip out.

Re: Help me Read the screen-please
I agree with Matt,my interpretation of the screen readout from left to right is fish, bait, fish, bait and the suspended hook at 26’ is probably a salmon, hooks on the bottom with the bait probably smallies.when running or trolling in less than 30 fow you want to be running 200khz or high frequency and when trolling in 30 fow or deeper you want to be in 50khz or low frequency or split 50/200

I suffer from lack of patience.........
Re: Help me Read the screen-please
I've never fished Lake M, but around July 1 I wouldn't be seeking salmon and lakers in 30 feet of water even on a good slope. The "bait stacks" are weird looking too. Maybe yellow perch and white bass, with a few smallies or walleye hanging around? That isn't the depth, " bait" or activity I'd be seeking if my goal was salmon and lakers in July! As I said, never fished there. There are fish on the screen, just not targeted species! Prove me wrong!

TU,
Before I moved back to Vermont from AZ, I contacted Fish & Game and asked about all the lakes in and around the NorthEast Kingdom area.
First I was corrected.."It's Vermont Game and Fish not Fish and Game". OK...LOL Was told that Lake Memphremagog was large and long with water shared with Canada and had Salmon and Lake Trout and was stocked with the same every year. Good cold deep lake. Truth is 85% of the lake belongs to Canada (and that is where the deeper water is). Also the Vermont fishing license is no good in Canadian water. The Vermont portion has a bottom like a frying pan...approx. 25-28 ft deep with only three or four holes that are 35-40 ft. . That was were I caught mind. But it is "LOADED" with small mouth bass. They just had a bass tournament there last week with 50 + boats.
But there are other lakes in the NE Kingdom like Willoughby, Seymour, Echo, Salem, Crystal and a few others, all with depths 130 to 350+ and contain Salmon and Lakers.
P.S. Bass like Salmon lures. LOL
