Transom replacement.

Well, I finally got enough time strung together to rebuild my transom. I was going to do it March, but the weather was so cold and I was pretty busy. This is a project and when I got part way into it, I wondered what the hell had I gotten myself into. About 14 hours labor, I've got the old one out, now it's build and put it together. Thinking same amount of time. It's a good thing I am doing it, the thing would break in half if I didn't hold it right. Also weighs a ton, I could barely lift it out of there. Anyone wonder why she squats in the back?
I guess I won't be too far off the early fishing, let you guys find them and I'll be ready.

Mine was the original from '74.

I should have done mine when I changed the floor Andy, but I needed to fish. I was concious of having to do it some day and held the floor back a bit. I was happy to see my foam choice has held up well and the drainage system, extruded roof vent, seems to work well.

Good news is that the original raw wood transoms lasted for 40-ish years, so we won't be doing it again.

One thing I wish I had done is to overdrill all the mounting holes and fill those holes with thickened epoxy, then drill the mounting holes through the epoxy when the transom is in place. Makes for a totally waterproof transom install.

One tough job. I replaced the transom wood on a 14' aluminum and I thought that was a lot of work. I like your idea of over drilling the holes. Better than new. Please keep us updated.

WOW major project.. I know replacing hte dash on my 1987 lund sport fisherman was a big job well worth the effort when it was finally done...

Nice work. I did mine in my '78 Starcraft 18' Supersport a few years ago. Big job, but luckily it went well. I heard about overdrilling the holes only after my install was finished. Great idea I wished I'd done but she's on year 7 or so and still solid. You'll have a lot of confidence in her once you've got a new transom, I'd imagine. I found my power trim was much more accurate and responsive with a solid transom. Ha.

Had a setback on the transom project. When I got home with materials for the job on Thursday, I could smell gas bad. Long story short, I have a rusted out elbow on my fuel pump assembly. I guess I need to fix this first. Kind of a chicken and egg thing. I didn't want to wait for a professional, so I pouted for a day, then jumped in today. Not bad, don't ever try to pull your tank, pull your bed for you do it yourselfers!

Finally progress on the boat. The truck was a major headache, gas line fuel pump, rear window. Took much longer than expected.
Got my transom in tonight after days of bad weather and bad knees. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
