That's great to know that they're spawning in there! I'm so in love with the ADK ponds-- there's nothing in VT that compares. I was doing well with the rainbows during early spring in my favorite VT pond (with the crappies), but now I can't seem to find them.

I hiked in the dark to get to the ADK pond I've been fishing, so I could be there before dawn. Nothing was biting, so I moved around and tried the less rocky part closer to the trail. At around 6:45 I started catching a few small rainbows, around 12". I actually had a lot of bites, but I kept losing them. On that end of the pond I lost one bigger fish near the shore that might have been a brown.

I headed back to the area where I'd found the browns before. I decided to cast the Rapala out and just let it sit floating while I cast the Phoebe. I was counting down the Phoebe's drop and SPLASH a big brown took the Rapala. I hooked it and fought it for a few seconds, but it got off. I retrieved the Phoebe, cast it out deep, let it sink, and hooked into another biggie! Landed that one, about 18" on a rainbow trout Phoebe.

I probably should have kept casting if I wanted to catch another, but I knew I was going to eat that fish, and I wanted to know what it was eating so I gutted it right away and put it on ice. It's belly was not full like the one from last time. It had a few small crayfish, and a big dragonfly larva.

That was it. Once the sun hit the water, I was able to see very well again, and I didn't see any browns cruising the shallows like the last couple times.

great report andric. you didnt get to sight fish any today. did you go north or south when you left the rocks? sounds like you got into the stocked bows. your hooked on the adirondack ponds and there are lots of them for you to explore and fish.was the brown you landed chunky? this heat will have them in the colder water and will be heat stressed so not recommended to catch and release. keep after them.

I found the bows at the north end of the pond, closer to the the trail to the road.
Oops, I forgot to post the pic of the brown. Here it is. I wouldn't call it chunky, but there was plenty of meat on it, dark orange like the last one. At first I thought it was skinnier than the last one, but I think it's just because the last one was packed full of crayfish.

7/1/18 it was too hot! Work brought me to the northeast kingdom, so when I finished around 6:00 I headed to my favorite VT lake for browns and smelt, which is practically on the way, and jumped right in for a swim. Waterskiers and pontoon boats made for a noisy time (another reason to love the ADK ponds!). I don't think it's possible to catch a brown here during summer weather because of the boats. I trolled and cast from the kayak around sunset, with no bites. After dark I anchored and set up for smelt (and hopefully browns). I caught a couple dozen smelt. I lost two big browns and netted one fat 16" brown. Chunkier than the ADK browns I've been catching, but the color of the meat on these smelt-fed fish isn't nearly as vibrant.

7/2/2018 took a quick trip this morning with alayna up to a roadside trout pond. she wanted to catch her ist rainbow and she did as soon as we got there but then swimmers kept swimming by our set lines so we decided to leave. on the way home we stopped at the kids trout pond that is stocked every year only for kids. in 10 minutes alayna landed 6 rainbows and missed several. the heat in that spot was unbearable so we left for home. hoping jeff post the pics tonight.

7/3/2018 at 6:30 pm my son and daughter-in-law decided we should take alayna and her 2 sisters emily 2 and half years old and gracie 1 and half years old to fish the kids trout pond. they brought there little rods up that they were given to by the lci last summer to alayna. well it didnt take long for alayna to catch a 15 inch rainbow as the bites were on fire on my rod. so emily came running over and says pa pa i want to catch a trout on big pole i said okay. threw it out and it took off and fish on and emily was reeling the rainbow in while i held the rod. she got it in and was very excited and my daughter-in-law videoed it. amazing how she didnt give up. then it was gracies turn after she missed 3 on my rod she finally hooks into one and she struggled to reel it in but i was determined to just let her do it by herself on my rod. after about 5 or 6 minutes she finally got it in and the fish was exausted she wanted to play with it.. no more kids poles after this for them.   between emily and gracies they landed 3 rainbows a piece. in an hour when we had to leave as the bugs were out bad. the girls did very well and both excited just to fish with my poles. i was very excited to see how happy all 3 girls were and alayna cheering them on. as they get older like chawk said last night vs a text im going to have my hands full but somehow i think im going to enjoy it. :D i will be going out with chawk trolling soon and will be taking alayna along.
jeff will post pics for me today

9/5/2018 it was going to be another hot one today so i decided to head up in the high peaks where its cooler for some trout fishing. started slow at 7 am to 9 am with just 3 bullhead and 2 pumpkinseeds so far. im fishing in 14 fow instead of the usual 30 to 40 fow i normally fish when its warm. about 300 yards down. 9:20 am a great run and fish on i land a 10 inch brookie. 5 minutes later the same rod i tossed back out another run and another 10 inch brookie. this years stockers and they grew an inch they stock most there at 9 inches. although some are born there. then at 10 am caught a little bullhead tossed it back out hit the water and splash fish on i land a 10 an half inch brookie that was very hungry it inhaled the hook and crawler. i didnt have any dillies for this trip. fished another hour landing 5 more brookies from 7 inches to 9 inches. a pretty good morning and it felt great getting back in a trout pond. supposed to cool off this weekend so planning on hiking back into trout ponds. took a few pics today and will have chawk post later. trout crazy this pond really surprised me since i was fishing the lower end and shallow. :o :o :o

Wow that is surprising. Maybe there are cold springs in the shallows?

As I mentioned, I was also surprised to catch trout in an ADK pond recently. Mine were in deeper water, though. I think around 30 feet. The 1/8oz Phoebe seems to
fall about 2 feet per second, and I was counting 17 seconds.

That same rainbow phoebe in my last pic in this thread got lost on the bottom of a VT Pond a few days ago. No bites were had. Gotta find another!

the bite will just get better as the highs will be in the 60,s this weekend. where you were fishing i think the depth there is 26 feet all along that shore line most of it in the center anyhow
