Dodgers and Flashers and other Attactors
Dodgers and Flashers and other Attactors
Being new to trolling and attracted to shiny things I have a tendency to purchase things that I probably shouldn't (like gimicks). So I am hoping to get a little help on what sort of attractors and things I should have in my arsenal as well as proper techniques that work on champlain. I have watched enough youtube to get an idea of what each type does, but then see that some people run the attractor off the ball, and some run them in-line, some use vertical, and some horizontal. I have had a little success with dodgers and tube flies this last weekend off a dipsy and for the most part understand them, but I am not sure what impact trolling speed has on these other than that they obviously have different action at different speed. What types (brand) of attractors work best on champlain, and whats the prefered way to run them?

Re: Dodgers and Flashers and other Attactors
I use 8" coyote flasher dodger on 30lb braid. I have had really good luck using red on cbamplain, but one of my friends uses glow and green and we use Joe's smelt, and black or grey ghost. And of course my own flies I tie. I use a lot of mallard flank to give the side profile of the alewife and the, blue and green bucktail, and flashabou with some Mylar tubing on my tandem book. It is deadly, but I found that trolling extreme slow is my strength in salmon fishing. The leader length was another mysetery I have to solve for the speed, which is 30" for me. In the fall I caught plenty of fish about 15ft behind the downrigger and more recently trail the slide diver by 50' and it works. Just keep in mind that you WILL get line twist using a flasher sooner or later. I always have a flasher on one rod every time I go out.
Re: Dodgers and Flashers and other Attactors
So you run braid to the flasher and then a short leader off the flasher to the fly?

Vertical blades on the deep rigger can definitely attract fish to your spread. I usually just run those between the ball and release, with a short leader to the lure ("tight to the ball"). The shallower rigger has a longer lead so fish that shy from the blades will see the straggler up higher and further back. Sliders add some flash as well.
Fish can sense movement from a distance as much as flash, so that combo really works. I like to think that I'm imitating a small school of bait with my spread.
Just another option to add to the dodger fly combo. Dattilio's sells the vertical blades.
Does anyone know of an online source for the blades?

so to be sure I'm visualizing this right, these vertical blades are like made of dr line and you attach the ball to the blade rig then the top of the rig goes to the bottom of the the release? I use chamberlains for reference.

Re: Dodgers and Flashers and other Attactors
Keep it simple!! Silver, brass or gold attractors (long is better). Attach directly to the ball with release
2 ft. up the cable. Run spoons 15 to 20 feet behind the release. I use my
old Dave Davis spinners (3 ft of different sizes blades). Mylar blades are available
in a baffling variety of finishes but they tend to be a little too active when trolling
over 2 mph. I would rarely use in line flashers or attractors?

That's all I could find, but Dattilio's usually has a good selection.keithm87 wrote:Is there anywhere online other than fish307 that sells the verticals? I cant pay $7 for 2 week shipping from under 200mile away

There used to be a couple local guys making them but I think they gave it up. You could get lucky at a local bait/tackle shop and find some. Call around, ask if they have any fathead blades or dragginball blades. They work great.
