My lady and I decided to fish out of Converse today knowing the boat Poker Run was going to happen and thought it would be fun to watch the boats blast through the narrows while we trolled the NY side. We launched right on time for the beginning of the bite at 9:40 and set lines just north of Split Rock and trolled south. After an hour or so of messing with line depth I found the hungry ones at 55’ and put our first fish in the boat, a nice healthy salmon with no marks. We continued south past Grog and my port slide diver fired and a VERY feisty 21” steelhead went airborne SIX TIMES before I got it to the boat so my loyal mate could net it. The battle it put up definitely stressed it to the point I did not think it would survive so on ice it went. No sooner than I closed the cooler I heard a thunderous sound and looked to the north and here comes 60+ boats racing down the lake STRAIGHT AT US! I grabbed my phone and started filming and much to my disbelief the pack did not veer off to the east but instead SPLIT in two and passed us on both sides doing 100 mph or so! Bear in mind we were trolling 150 yds off the shoreline and there was 3/4 of a mile of fricken water between my Mistress and the VT side. We survived their run south and kept trolling and netted another salmon, again clean, no marks and here they come back up the lake. Do you think they would have adjusted course knowing there was a troller on the NY shoreline?? NOPE!! Same deal, and this time a boat passed approximately 60’ off my starboard side, again at 100 mph (video link below). As I watched one of the boats chine walk after it hit another boat’s wake after it passed it dawned on me just how STUPID these fricken morons are. Again, there was 3/4 of a mile of lake between us and VT but they must get their rocks off seeing how close they can get to basically stationary objects.
Needless to say it was quite the day on the pond, we saw some cool (and some NOT so cool) boats and managed to get what I consider an excellent mid August bite considering the late start.

Re: A Game of Poker, I Won Silver
I was in Burlington Bay and watched them take off from a mile or two away. It was definitely a cool thing to see and I even had the thought that I would have liked to have been closer but after watching that video I'm glad they weren't. I'm not normally the type to do something like this but if I were you and I could pull any registration numbers from the boats that came by so close I would report them. That was uncalled for and dangerous. I'm sure they broke some noise ordinance too. Later in the day I was back on the NY side and a boat went by three or four miles to the east and it was crazy loud even from that distance. I did have four of them blast by me a couple of hundred yards away and those things are truly impressive.
On another note great job on the fish. I found lakers anywhere from 70-130' and they went from lazy to aggressive in the afternoon once the wind and waves died down. Lots of big fat fish and ended with one just shy of 34 inches.

We were in the narrows on the ny shoreline as well. And had 15 of the 75 boats run by us within 60 feet. We watched as they all went to Westport and turned and lined up again. We pulled lines and got out of there. How they think this is safe is wild to me, it should be outlawed! We heard it was a poker run for cancer, if the morons that own these things would use their heads and donate the money they spent in fuel costs it would have been better for everyone! Anyone up for trying to petition against this nonsense?!

I have struggled with what to do about the Poker Run because they raise a LOT of money for Camp Ta Kum Ta and children with cancer. I have a few connections and at the very least I am certain I can get them them to make a few changes as to how they route the boats, especially in a section of the lake is “only” .8 miles wide…..

A little common sense goes a long way. I had four of them go by me later in the afternoon and they stayed 100 yards away and other than being crazy loud it caused no issues and I actually enjoyed it. Most of the boats in the video were fine and caused no issue other than a bit of noise. The handful that flew by way too close are just assholes looking to cause trouble and they should be called out. It doesn't take much at that speed for something to go horribly wrong. Show your connections the video and maybe they can identify them and even if not just make clear that in the future that won't be tolerated and they'll be banned.Mistress wrote: ↑Tue Aug 19, 2025 9:37 am I have struggled with what to do about the Poker Run because they raise a LOT of money for Camp Ta Kum Ta and children with cancer. I have identified the owner of the red boat that passed us less than 60’ away and yes, he is an A hole that makes pasta sauce and is an infamous slum lord in the Burlington area. I have yet to identify the owner of the boat that passed us even CLOSER than 60’ away at 100mph plus. The pic below is the best screen shot I could grab off the video, if anybody recognizes it and knows who owns it I would appreciate the info.
