Tablet for Navionics
Hi guys, I'm curious about running a tablet with Navionics for my charts. What tablet are you running? How do you keep it charged?
Right now I'm using an older fishfinder for the actual fishfinder and my newer fishfinder is only being used for the maps / gps. I'd like to put the newer unit to good use and then run a tablet for the mapping.
Thanks.

Re: Tablet for Navionics
Hi Shawn, I have always used iPad mini’s. 10+years? The screen size is big enough without taking too much window space. They stay up on windshield on a backside magnet and I power it with a cord to a double outlet plug in the cigarette lighter outlet.
I have seen other folks run a similar setup with other
Tablets. As long as the Navionics app is on the App Store it will work. I use the same app in my iPhone while out with charters and record the trip on my phone in the back ground for future reference… same app runs on both and records data back and forth. Pretty neat. This means I can review all my trips on my IPhone after recording them in my iPad mini…
Last time I updated the app I think it is up to $22 but worth every cent.
If You buy a used iPad off eBay you can do this all for around $250. You don’t need the phone connection at all as long as you pre down load the map in wifi. The gps in the iPad is all that is required!
Neat technology. Good luck

And you can mark weighpoints where you get fish and keep a few in memory for reference.

The charter captains are ok with this? The guy I charter with would throw me overboard.

They have No idea. It’s in your pocket!!
Notice I didn’t mark any weigh pts in Port Richie.. lol
But that spot in the back water in sandy bay held many redfish, snook and even a jack cravelle in incoming tide:)
That spot will always work from what the captain said….
I plan to retire in that area in a few years and that fishing track will be very handy by then.

I use an inexpensive 8" tablet for $125 at Best Buy from Samsung. The subscription for Navionics is $15 a year. You get all the updates throughout the year. Been awesome. Light weight too! Aftermarket holder from Amazon for $25 it's on a snake like bendable thingy. No cell connection required. Just Wifi at home to download updates from time to time.

Re: Tablet for Navionics
If you go the Apple way you need to get a tablet with phone capability not a cell plan but phone capability; the reason is the Apple tablet w/o it doesn't have a gps.
Contrary to a Android tablet that has the gps incorporated.

If you are fishing without a bimini or other form of top, are these tablets bright enough to read (in the sun)?

I have a filter that makes it work in the sun and even when your wearing polarized sunglasses. So YES. But
You gotta get the right filter screen protector.. got mine on Amazon years ago…
