Icedawg...thanks for posting.
That is a MUST video to watch, not only for ice fishing or frostbite fishing, but for being out on the water in general.

Very educational for sure.

Let me put it this way... cold water and no PFD really means you want to commit suicide!

My son who I am very proud of, is a certified USCG rescue swimmer and he is an 100% avid fisherman. He is a die hard fisherman; but he will no longer go ice fishing because he says no ice is safe and he has completed too many ice rescues. The only way he is going out on the ice now is in his full cold water rescue suit to save the life of others. He will fish from his boat in cold water up until the time he puts his boat in storage. He will not go anywhere anytime without wearing his PFD. He says he would still like to ice fish, but even with a PFD he has no desire because he has seen what happens when some poor soul goes through the ice, too often they can not come back up through the hole they went through. He has done too many body recoveries of ice fishermen. His words do make me think twice about ice fishing and wearing my PFD during cold water fishing periods.

If you are going ice fishing... do use the buddy system. Do have ice picks and a safety rope and why not wear an inflatable PFD too.

I wonder how much they pay those people that are test subjects? Notice I didn't say Guinea Pigs; but maybe....

OK..... So i Have not ice fished since i went through the ice in 1991, January 25Th 1991 to be exact. A very vivid memory that will be in my mind forever and for everyone who tried to help me and get me to safety also. I went in over my head over 40ft of water on a path that cars and guys had walked on all day.
2 feet away from me stood a very dumbfounded friend..Bassgeek (Brock).
In a dream like state I looked up at the hole and thought shit i got to get out of here. So i did.... Just pulled myself up onto the ice through the little hole i went through, now flat on my belly like a walrus. This all happened in seconds.
Then there was a split second when i heard Brock say "oh no" and i was back in the water, with a much bigger hole, about the size of a kiddy pool. in seconds under my own power i was up on the ice again...... real flat and real still. The look on Brocks face was just unreal.....Him trying to save me and me screaming for him to get away from the hole.
Then F*ck*n he11 if i didnt go back throught the ice again. Guys by this time were pouring out of shanty town with ropes, planks and pfds. By this time i was just mad..... real pissed, I finally got Brock too back very far away and i was able to pull myself up on the ice again..... 8" of ice, stand up and walk away. Wet, mad, not cold and Alive. 5 minutes or 30 minutes no one knows.
Where I went through the ice was paper thin and after i got done splashing around the ice was 8" thick where i crawled out!
Over time i have gone over this in my mond a 1000 times and cant see what i could have done different other just not be on the ice.
I learn two very importent things that day, you never really know how safe the ice is and Brock is one Hell of a friend!
i had to promiss my mom i would never go out on the ice again....... allmost as bad a being a JETS fan (yeah that too)
Tons of people ice fish and i wish them well......In 6 hours January 28 i will be fishing.... In my boat!
Be safe Todd

Happy 20th anniversay Todd.
I am very happy you survived this incredible adventure and share with us those dramatic moments.
I am not a fan of ice fishing, and reading your post reinforces my feeling.
I rather be in a boat.

Good luck to all of you on the white stuff... be safe.
