PA 2011 opening day greeted us with warm temperatures and swirling winds. Better than rain I guess.
I did not see a deer all morning but stuck it out in my stand as my hunting partners have been seeing does since sun up. Noon came and I radioed my buddy to see if he wanted to get down for a lunch break. He replies, “I have three does walking around me so you should stay in your stand”.
Fifteen minutes later two bucks come out of the mountain laurel heading straight for me. First buck looked to be a fork horn which passed under my stand. The second buck jumped down the steep embankment heading for the river offering no shot. I get back on the radio and tell my friend that I just blew my chance at a Rack Buck. As I was on the radio the Rack Buck suddenly appeared at 75yds back in the laurel crossing the ridge top in front of me. The buck stopped broad side before entering the logging road most likely to survey for danger. The Remington 7600 did its job as the buck expired on the logging road.
As my father use to say, “When they come they come.”
