WHALON BAY WAS HOT!
WHALON BAY WAS HOT!
Haven't been able to get on the lake since first week of July for a multitude of
reasons. On Friday, 10/14, we drove thru the driving rain from Conn. to our camp on Otter Creek . Too much wind on Saturday, stayed land locked. On Sunday the view of waves from Converse looked like too much for our 17-footer. Put in at Shelburne. Fish were scarce and very little bait was spotted. Caught only 5 ciscos and had several releases with nobody home.
Monday we launched in Otter and crossed over to the NY side. Waves were
3-4 feet. Trolled up to Split Rock: only a few fish spotted. We turned the corner into Whalon's Bay and VIOLA! BAIT & FISH ALL OVER THE PLACE, from
15' to 60'. Cloudy sky, calm water, surface temp. was 58. I put on an
MP6 I had painted with my version on the rainbow needlefish. Let out 15' of
line and was about to set in the rigger when BAM - salmon on! About 15",
released. Caught two lakers ond two more salmon. The largest salmon was
over 20", caught on a Kop Kar. The fish was pretty thin, making me believe
it was post spawn. Now that's a good sign!
My fishing buddy caught 5 lakers, using everything from a pink/silver spoon to
flat lining a rapala. We didn't land as many fish as we had hoped, but we had
plenty of action with lots of releases. The most excitement was caused by
a laker we never boated. The fish grabbed my Kop Kar lure and headed for
the bottom. I couldn't control the fish, but finally reeled him up to the surface.
When he spotted the boat he made a dash underneath and cut the line on the
port side downrigger cable. And I lost my lure! The amazing part, I was using
lead core line and was only out 3 colors when the fish hit. It looked to be near
12 lbs.
A great afternoon on the lake! We had to break camp and leave on Tuesday,
but we hope to be back in a couple of weeks. Weather permitting, we will
be fishing the Frost Bite Derby, or at least attending the BBQ, Look forward
to meeting many of this forum's members.

Re: WHALON BAY WAS HOT!
Thanks for the report. Sounds like the post spawn fish are starting to move and feed. Lakers in the mix keeps it interesting! I hope to be scouting in that area this weekend. Serenity Now on 68.
