Converse report 6/28

Post by Caiman (Shawn) »

Left the boat launch this morning around 6:30 AM. Headed out and tried for salmon for a few hours around the islands and could only seem to get the suspended lakers to hit. I decided to give stackers a try and picked up some lakers on those too. Earlier in the day the Needlefish in "copcar" was working good and as the sun got higher anything in silver/blue seemed to be the ticket. It was weird as I swear when the sun came out the bite stopped and as soon as it went behind a cloud the fish would hit. Decided to slow down and target the lake trout as it seemed the salmon were going to be tough. 52' down about 10' back. Williams wabler size 50 in silver/blue.

The baitfish seemed to be scattered around and I didn't see the huge clouds of them like I did last week but when I found even small clouds of them the lakers were right there with them. Ended up getting 10 lakers to the boat with about 5 shaking off and one absolute monster that snapped 15lb test like it was nothing. Biggest that came to the boat was just over 10lbs. Kept two small keepers and released all the bigger ones. Ended up catching a Beautiful 5lb Brown !! It was a good day for me and the Brown was the icing on the cake.

I had a bunch of firsts today.....
1. First time catching a fish on a stacker.
2. First time catching a fish on a Lite Bite slide diver.
3. First time catching a brown trout on the lake.
4. First time losing a stacker....
5. First time losing a Lite Bite side diver....

Thanks guy's. Yeah the Brown is a really pretty almost copper color. It's not the biggest in the lake at 5lbs but it has really nice colors and a kipe and it was my first so it's headed to the taxidermist.

Ron, The boat is working out great. I heard you on 68 yesterday and tried to raise you after I got the Brown to the boat but I think you were out of range or had already left.

Thorny,
It came on a rigger. 52' down on a Williams Wabler size 50, Silver/Blue. It hit the spoon and popped the release and then dropped it and as I was reeling in to reset it came back and hit it again.

Quick question on the slide diver....How far should it run off to the side of the boat on setting #4 ? I tried all the settings and it never got more than about 6' away from the boat. Am I doing something wrong?

Shawn

Shawn, I run my divers set to 3. If you go too high they may flip, and then they won't release. The diver will continue to run away from boat as it sinks. It is common to have it 6 ft away when it's like 10feet down.

Good luck

so now I know who caught the brown on Saturday. Herd you on the radio 68. a lot of boats at split rock and whalens bay. was the bite hot there recently? we caught 20 or so lakers and 3 short salmon. our best luck was just north of Westport 50 - 70 down over 150+ water. Chartreuse
/silver speeddies.
