Silvery Cisco's and Icy Whitefish

I have heard people refer to Cisco's in Champlain as abundant but also scarce. Its confusing! I am here today to as for information about them. Where they are depth wise, relative to the thermocline, where generally in the lake they are, and maybe how I could get one trolling or casting or any other way (Through the ice would be very cool!). I am aware some of the hard core salmon anglers catch them. Another thing that would be cool to figure out is Whitefish through the ice. Does anyone know safe ice fishing spots that have produced Whities?

Thanks everyone, Deb!!

Cisco's seem to be scarce. Not sure what has happened to them? We haven't caught one in 10 years in the Fall. White fish are being caught over near Port Douglas to Schuyler on the NY shore with great success by a few fishermen from a boat jigging. Safe ice over deep water is problematic to safely ice fish for them anytime.

When we visit Michigan there is nothing better than a White fish sandwich! The Indians are allowed to net them and sell commercially to restaurants up in the UP. It seems the Cisco's are getting scarce there too!

Back 40 years ago people fishing smelt off Thompson's would throw a 3-5 lb white fish on the ice to discard as a trash fish. In fact their great table fare!

That's all I know.
