Smoker Salmon For Christmas

I decided to fish today despite the gale force winds overnight and black ice from a flash freeze for the early morning trip down to Converse. Matt B (Reelax) joined me aboard my Mistress and we launched shortly after 7 along with two other diehard Frost Biters, Black Ghost and Dry Net who drove all the way up from my childhood hometown of Canaan NH despite the wind and bet it all on the forecast for it to lay down. I hope they bought a lottery ticket because boy did they luck out along with all of us! By 9:00 the lake was flat calm, sun shining and the bite was on which brought out a few fair weather boats to join the troll.
We started just south of Thompson’s Pt heading north and before I could get the second rigger set we had a fish on, and then it was gone as fast as it hit. I finished setting both riggers at 25’ and 2 slide divers set on #4 120’ back and we made a pass up along the ledges where Dry Net was so I gave him plenty of berth and we headed across the abyss to NY and started picking away at silver and slime, about a 3/1 ratio and dipped into the south end of Whallon briefly but the fish machine didn’t look promising so we crossed back over and picked up doubles over 400 FOW so naturally I spun around hard and we worked that area the next 2 hours racking up a total of 9 salmon, dumped 8 and well over 20 lake trout, none over 7#, and our biggest salmon over the rail was a super fat almost 19” specimen. The primary bite was at 25’ with sliding cheaters also producing, silver and blue Speedy Shiner was the rock star followed by Bomb Pop.
We called it a day at 1:00, I think Matt was tired from reeling in fish
We kept 4 salmon to smoke for Christmas Eve and another excellent day on the water. I want to wish you all a very Merry Christmas!
Pat

After 6 weeks in the deer woods, this trip was exactly what I needed. With a freezer full of venison again it’s time to start frostbite season! The bite was consistent all day and the action was in an area that hasn’t been a hot zone for me in the past.

Good to see Drynet and NHJim as well as Blackghost and a few other boats out. There were 6trailers in the lot on a late December day… Not bad for late December …

Any day you can net 30 fish by 1pm is a fun time, even without a grill aboard!!!

Thanks for the fun day Pat.

Hiya Pat

Submitted an earlier reply but somebody that looks like me either failed to hit the submit button or cyberspace claimed another victim.
Anyway,
Nice job on decorating the boat! It might go easier on the trees (don't get me preservationist wrong) in general if all fishermen followed suit. Might even make for (get the ugly sweaters outta here) a good annual contest.
And one look at the condition of those four fishees you guys kept speaks volumes about the state of the "Groceries" in Lake Champlain. No further biological study required!
Thanks for the holiday report and no more smart alec comment about which end to light.
