This is my first semi report for anyone who may be interested of what the average fisher-persons experience may be on Mallets bay this time of the year. Apologies if its not good!
The past two Saturdays I have gone to Mallets bay in search of Pike and Smallies! I have caught absolutely nothing! I can report that water temps today were 43.5 throughout the bay though! Last week at the launch a couple of folks said they caught 50 Smallies on a 15 foot rock bottom part of the bay! Mallets I have found is very hit or miss and a lot of it depends on spot. Last year there wasn't a day on Mallets where I didn't see/someone on the boat catch a fish. I was marking fish in deeper areas though-some around an island in about 45 FOW - As well as right on the bottom of a drop off in about 25 FOW.
If you have been having luck on Mallets or in general let me know!
Again sorry if this is not good, I tried to make it as good as possible even being that I couldn't catch one yet!

Good report, Deb! Thanks for posting. I haven't gotten into the water yet as my boat is still in the shop for minor repairs but hopefully soon I'll be out there.

This time of year there are not many weeds in the bays so not as many bait fish that feed and benefit from the protection, some pike might be heading to the rivers to spawn so you might have more luck in there and the reeds.
I see you’re fishing from a boat, are you still/drift casting or trolling? what are you using for lures/bait?
If you’re spotting fish and nothing is biting I can suggest try to identify what they are, bring live bait- dropping a live worm or night crawler, (crawfish or a live minnow) might wake them up.
My goto bass/pike casing lure historically has been a 7” rubber worm but last year a Friend of mine (Joe from Jersey) showed me a nedrig (it’s 3” really soft rubber worm with a weighted head) bouncing off the bottom comes in different colors(dark brown/green with purple head) he was hammering smallies 6 or 7 to my 1 even after I switched to nedgig primary difference I had 10lbs mono and he had 12lbs braid.
