Phil Scott originally proposed to close the Salisbury Hatchery in 2019 however we sportsman pushed back and they tabled the idea. Fast forward to the present he will do nothing to stop it as he feels the past election cycle was a mandate and he is untouchable at the polls. Flip flop Phil relied heavily on the sportsman's support to get elected initially (I personally helped the POS's campaign) and has reneged on several campaign promises from gun laws to legalizing marijuana and more. On the Legislative end of it he is a capon. Neutered. Nutless. He is just a body at the podium.
I have a few connections at VTF&W and will be in touch to see what the status is...

I reached out to Mike W. and like always he got right back to me as evidenced in timeline between my posts here. Please see below for contact information to reach out to those involved in the process. Perhaps if enough of us speak up we can save the hatchery yet again, gotta think positive in this day and age with the lawmakers we have in Montpelier!

Hi Pat

Thanks for reaching out and conveying your concerns. I’m sure you’re not alone. This decision was not an ease one and nobody has taken it lightly. I honestly don’t know if this is a done deal, but it is in the Department’s budget. The final decision will likely play out in this current legislative session.
If you’d like to express your concerns, I would drop a note to Commissioner Herrick (christopher.herrick@vermont.gov), your Fish and Wildlife Board member for Chittenden County (allison.frazier@partner.vermont.gov), or local state representative.

Mike

"I’ve had a lot of folks asking me why they are closing the Salisbury hatchery knowing how detrimental this will be to Vermonters and our fishery. According to Commissioner Herrick it is simply because Governor Scott told him to close it. When the commissioner acknowledged that the hatchery was in compliance with their discharge permit, ANR Secretary Julie Moore deflected to macroinvertebrates, but according to the 2025 budget booklet it appears the decision to immediately close the hatchery is the result of pay raises.

The outdoor community had a handshake agreement with Governor Scott in 2019. Leaders from several sporting organizations met with he and his staff in his ceremonial office and signed an agreement to support a fee increase on hunting, fishing, and combination licenses as a mechanism for keeping the hatchery running; and for most of this community it has been a real gut punch to see the administration go back on that agreement.
To now learn that the Salisbury closure is a knee-jerk reaction to funding raises that were finalized way back in August is incredibly disappointing.
