Save a Turkey, Eat a Salmon, 2024 edition

Post by Dilly Worm »

Thanksgiving 2024 was calm wind and no waves, so with cooperative weather my 12yo daughter and I tried again for the family tradition of sparing the turkeys.

We launched at Arnold Bay and stopped at a few usual locations looking at the sonar, but not seeing any signs of fish we crossed to the NY side and set lines. Thus began 3 hours of trolling without a single bite. We were getting close to the time when we promised to be home for the big dinner (ham was the backup meal in case of no salmon), when finally a downrigger released ! Felt like a small fish on the cheater, and it got off before we saw it. Then the other downrigger fired, and a 14" salmon kicked the skunk off the boat, but still meant no salmon dinner, so back in the lake it went to grow bigger.

Sonar finally looked fishy, so we circled around the spot and got another bite, this time a rare brown trout. By now we were out of time and we started pulling lines to head home and eat ham. With 2 lines left in the water, the stern rod fires and the drag is screaming. She starts reeling in, the fish fights back, the rod is bent way over, and after a good fight a fat salmon is in the net !

22.5 inches, 4lbs,11oz, caught on a Swilly Creamsickle on 5 colors of lead in ~100 FOW.

My salmon was a bit smaller than hers, so it went back:

And a brown:

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone !
I do not exaggerate when I talk about fishing - I underestimate, like I say "just one more cast honey, then I'll come home" !
Keep Calm and... Fish On !
