Another nice steelhead

Post by meangreen1 »

Decided on a short afternoon trip to fish with my girlfriend since she couldn’t go last week. Set up out of Converse and hooked up to a smolt right off. We trolled down to Thompson’s Point and then across to split rock. Was pretty choppy and made for a bouncy troll. We cut up the NY side north to the ferry. We saw lots of bait and hooks on the screen. We set up two riggers on the bottom for lakers and two riggers high for salmon. We were in the 83-85’ of water with the rigger at 80’ and we hooked up to the steelhead. By the time I handed the rod to my girlfriend it was airborne. It put up a hell of a fight with several runs of screaming the drag. Was a clean 26” steelhead. We caught it on a Michigan stinger magnum in the sunburst color. They like those big lures too. The steelhead was thick for its size. We managed to hook into a few more decent fish but they managed to shake free before the boat. All in all a fun day… was planning on ending my season but it’s been some fun fishing lately so may do a few more trips before getting ready for the hunting season.

Must have been a surprise to see a big chrome fish jumping out of the water when you'd been trolling near the bottom in 80 FOW, not what I'd expect to bite down there...

on the opposite end of the spectrum I picked up a big fat laker today, 40 ft down over 300 FOW...

Congrats to you both, that's a beautiful big steelie !

Yes, I'm estimating 40 feet down below the water surface... I was trolling with 7 colors of lead-core so I figure it sinks 5 ft per color, makes 35 feet plus another 5 ft for the Rapala...
