Westport Tuesday evening

Post by Pcraft237 »

Headed out yesterday going solo after some miscommunication with a fishing partner. Decided to head to Split Rock. Got north of Diamond Island, west side and set up 2 rods on Downriggers 30 ft down with cheater on each. Wasn’t long before rod popped with a 20 inch salmon caught on cheater with honeybee. Reset rod and cheater, sat down, reached for coffee. Nope not now. Other rod bounced and popped with an 18 inch salmon. Reset rod and cheater and within a minute another bouncing rod, this time a 24 inch laker on bottom spoon 30 ft down. While other lakers taken have been the typical silver color this one had a definite copper hue. One old lamprey scar, almost completely faded out. Lost what I assumed to be a laker and picked up one more before heading home.
Temp was in 60’s at surface, 50-55 at 30 ft down.

Nicely done. Sounded like a nice evening solo.

A little choppy heading north at 5, 20 minutes later the lake was calming down. A gorgeous evening on the lake, and a few fish too.

Yes it did. It was hooked well, and fought all the way to boat. One of those reel in close, grab net and land fish. This one actually jumped out of net twice. I got net positioned and pulled fish over it. Twice as I lifted it jumped and out of net. Quite the acrobatics from both of us.

Nice job! Those good sized salmon can be quite interesting when you are solo! I caught a 24"er last year by myself. That thing put on a show, jumping 5-6 times within 10-15' of the boat. Fun times.

Thanks. Sure was fun. So far everything I’ve had on has fought hard.
