Hi all, new to the board, what a great resource! Been a while since I salmon fished, 15 years! Have a boat again, with riggers and a mast, albeit small(15' tiller). Was going thru my old gear and found that my planer board releases are toast. They are the kind that have red sponge type material sandwiched between two washers, held together with small bolt/nut. I remember that we kept them in a bowl with water when we fished. Any suggestions where to find these releases now, or a recommendation for new planer releases?

The best ones that I've used are the " Laurvik " releases. They are alligator clip style with either red or chartruese bodies for hi-visibility when out on the planer board line. They do not float as some guys think, but they work well. I have used them for over 20 years. I'm pretty sure that Dattilio's on Shelburne rd. in south Burlington has a supply of them. Maybe at Dick's, the Old Fishin hole, or Vt field sports, depending on where you live.

I like the yellow Off Shore Releases on the shower curtain ring myself. I have not used the Larviks but they are less money. Then again I haven't really used my "big" boards in years but use inline boards instead.

I have a pair of Glo Birds from Yellow Bird and some of the Off Shore "mini" boards (OR34). I rigged the OR34s differently than they were designed: I rig them like the bigger OR12 boards. They have one yellow Off Shore Release on the arm and a red one on the rear. I did the same to the Glo Birds plus added "tattle flags" with the spring upgrade kit that The Old Fishing hole sells. These upgrade kits were intended to replace the spring that comes with Off Shore tattle flags but they work super on the 'Birds.

Agree with Jon 100%

A longer heavier board will ride better in the rougher water. I also use a rubber snubber from the board to the planer board line which also helps it ride better in a rough troll. The early spring troll in the skinny water can sometimes be very productive when it is rough!!

Oh, and I agree with John and Matt for releases. Good visibility and good releasibility but strong enough to rarely dry release. Last year while fishing in very rough water a rod got pulled out of a rod holder by the planer board line while turning. The line was still in the release and we were able to pull in some line and get the release, release the line and pull the line in until we got to the rod. Rod and reel saved!! Thank you Laurvik!

welcome to the board buddy , i still use the release u mention but they have a black foam that seams to hold up , I don't run boards much , w/ a tiller it is tough alone , my fishing partner disapeared 15 years ago Brad

it was kinda "woman" thang , she is history !!!

I liked the Laurvik releases but have since gone to in-line boards with tattle tale flags

I have used them all. My favorite by far is the yellow off shore. But they are not cheap.

Thanks all for the replies. Have any of you tried the Strike Saver release? I like the fact that it seems to lead to more hook ups, and the release is brought up to the boat as well.

The Strike Saver release looks promising. I might give it a try.

I think the releases you remember were the old "Jolly" brand releases. I had used the in the past and still have a couple in the bottom of my stack for planner releases. I checked with Dale over at Lakeshore Hardware in Malletts Bay. Believe it or not Jolly has gone out of business......... I do agree with the other posts I now mainly use Larvak releases and would use the offshore releases but at almost ten bucks a piece the Larvak's are a better deal!
