Canada's Frostbite Fleet
Yesterday I experienced the fact that Lake Champlain is far from the only body of water with a hearty frostbite fleet.
Ludo asked me to come up and fish Walleye with him...an offer that I couldn't pass up, especially since I had NEVER FISHED OUTSIDE UNITED STATES WATERS.
When we first arrived at the ramp it looked as though we'd have the water to ourselves. It just so happened that we were the first to hit the water as boats started appearing out of no where.
We first began to troll in shallower water but couldn't locate any Walleye that wanted to play. We did one real nice Small-mouth and then decided to move to deeper water and jig bottom. We spent the rest of the day jigging in water from 50 foot deep to near 70 foot.
Drifting with the currents and the breeze, keeping the jig bouncing along the bottom and keeping a tight line was key. These fish would hit so lightly sometimes I could only "see" a hit as a fish would "lift" my jig and slacken my line.
A slot fishery, we could only keep fish between 13 and 20 inches... six per fisherman, perfect eaters for the dinner table!
As it turns out, not too many folks were catching great numbers as the bite seemed a bit off, but I was sure happy to be catching fish that I never get much of a chance to fish for, and doing it for the first time of my life with a foreign fishing license. Exciting to me to say the least.
I can't forget to mention: While jigging over 60 fow I saw a giant Sturgeon, like maybe 7 or 8 feet long, breach out of the water like a giant whale. WOW what a sight!!!
I brought home some nice eaters to clean for Cathy, whose eyes were full of joy as I opened a cooler with a school of Walleye in it.
Thank you to Ludo for being such a great host. He feed me a hot home-made Lasagna dinner afterward and introduced me to his wonderful family. Thank you Ludo!
Fun times and I'm looking forward to doing it again!
Also thank you goes out to Andre as he is more familiar with the area and provided us with some intell. Andre was on the water several miles away but managed to find us before the sun set and handed over a very nice gift from his boat to Ludo's. Thank you Andre!

Raz, welcome to our local fishing grounds.
Now you have an idea of the travelling we do to go fishing Champlain.
With Ludo and Andre, you can't go wrong. They are great hosts and will do anything to make your walleye fishing an unforgettable experience.
Thanks for sharing your day on Canadian water.

Sounds like a great time.... How much is a license?
Re: Canada's Frostbite Fleet
Wow!! The fishin gypsy goes international. Nice pics and nice report. You're a great ambassador for the Champlain Fishermen and women. Thanks Ludo and Andre for introducing him to some fine fishing up north. Very impressive!

Nice fish Raz and Ludo! $12 a day isn't bad for a one day license. Good detail about this cool fishery!
