2012 Shootout is in The Books

It started the day out Overcast with a 10-15 knot NW wind at the 7:30 AM Beginning of what would be a beautiful day on the lake.

The lake appeared to be full of boats on this Year four of the Frostbite Shootout. The radio was rather quiet as those with plans and those just planning went about their work. I fished with Bill Snell & Peter Young aboard the newly reconstructed Newhaven Bill. A new transom will do wonders for boat integrity. Our plan was to fish the middle of the lake from the Unicorn down past the west of diamond to the Otter Creek Green can and back. Quite a route at trolling speed but we felt promise in the spread we could offer with four riggers and two long lines. It was a very slow start with a Laker first coming on a Wine-O fly out 4 colors on a side planer run clean no dodger.

The day progressed with two 17 inch salmon on Honeybee MP6 white black Bo-bo's .

Lots of lure changes and the VPT television crew of Neil & Jim went from Instigator's boat with Reggie and The Admiral to Done Deal & crew. Jim went from a Thompson's Point pickup I believe Mark FishHuntAdventure to Scott on Serenety 1.

Lot's of radio chatter and teasing as all tried very hard to put the winning Silver in the boat.

We picked up a nice 20 inch brown on the Wine-O

Another laker, two ciscos and a white perch.

We were approaching our 12:15 pull time when we passed by Thompson's and on a rather close approach we picked this, on a Purple Slide diver with purple/black Hi-Tec out 150 at 2.6 mph

We all agreed that it was the first time that we had heard of this taken on that combination.

Off to the barbecue and weigh in.....

We were set up in the lower parking lot this year. As the boats and fishermen started to arrive this hungry crew started to fill tables and start sampling the MANY good dishes brought this year. Not a bashful person in the bunch as friendships and food were exchanged with tales of the day's outing.

The VPT crew mingled filmed and ate recording this event. I believe that this year was bigger than ever. I did not try a count as events seemed to keep me on the run. I wish I could have spoken more to those I greeted and wish I could have spent time with those that I didn't But, We were a family today for sure.

Oh now for the entry's and 2012 Frostbite Shootout winner.....

Rob Thorn, Thorny was our first entry with a 22 1/2 inch 3.13 lb silver as Weighed and measured this year by Bill Lowell "Popster"

The next and only other entry was a 24 1/4 inch 5lb 4 oz Silver Landlock caught by Steve Moreau "FishDawg" of Milton, Vt.

Steve's name will be added to the trophy and returned to him to keep until next Year!

Congratulations STEVE!

I am sorry that I did not get any pictures today. Please anyone that took pictures add them here for those not attending to see. We missed those not attending and enjoyed seeing many new folks
Thanks to Ray, Adam and Todd of Point Bay for hosting us again this year. Look next spring to the New Outdoor Journal Schedule and the chronicle of the 2012 Shootout. As Neil Hilt said Lawrence Welk and the Frostbite are running neck and neck for repeat shows!! Ha!

Our FishFarmer had a encounter that involved a ladder and the ground that prevented his participation this year. He is recovering well and look to see him in the lake antics later this year

I truly look forward seeing you all on the lake and to the progression of this season and the rewards that await us all.

Fish On, Randy

What a day to be on the water Randy for the 4th annual shoot-out! Thanks everyone for the food and snacks at the BBQ. Excellent report Randy. That was a good strategy. Congratulations to Fish Dawg for taking the trophy home and Rob's runner-up fine entry. Record turn-out and good fishing conditions as everyone fished hard for the VPT Outdoor journal folks. Thanks to the host boats that took time to bring out the camera men to get some film for the show. Can't wait to view the show next Spring.

It's like Christmas Randy. Now we have to wait an entire year to do it again.

Thanks my friend!

Randy, Thanks for a another great shootout! It seems to get bigger and better every year. It is a super platform to get some of the best and most dedicated fishermen out on the lake for a day of friendly competiton. I am a bit humbled to have been the lucky one to have caught the biggest fish. We were blessed to have OK weather. Many thanks to the folks at Point Bay Marina for hosting. They have a fabulous spot for this! I hear that they have already given the OK for next spring's DYP derby. KUDO's!!! Again, Thanks Randy! You're a great host and you have made this shootout into a fishing season highlight!!

Sounds like the crews had a great time on Saturday. Congrats to FishDawg on his bragging rights for the year.Really cool the VPT was on board several boats catching the action. Can't wait for spring to meet up with everyone again. Good luck to all you Frost Biters the rest of the season.

another beautiful event, were else can you go and not catch fish and still have the best time of the year,
it was nice to see so many people but it gets harder to talk to everyone, especially when you are
stuffing your face, thanks to Randy, point bay, and all who brought food, and I hope I dont embarrass myself on tv,it was a pleasure having Neil Hilt (vpt) on board, when we transferd him to the done deal
it was a classic, no problem I wish he filmed that, a big thanks to the Admiral Jud for fishing with me, we gave it a great try but as I always say sometimes you get them sometimes you dont,,see you all and more next year,,Reggie

Yes- thank you Randy for being the drive on this great early event. I was going to tell you that personally but you were busy talking with the crew from Entertainment Tonight lol
I have to say this was a great day for me personally - I think yesterday was the first time I have felt peaceful, calm and relaxed in well over a year. Thank you - really enjoyed myself at the BBQ talking to many. Too short - looking forward to the next time already!

Thank you Randy for this ever evolving fishing event. It has become the grand opening gala of the frosbite season and I look forward to it like a child at christmas. Also thank you to Point Bay for the perfect place for this fleet of frozen fishermen to celebrate the sport we all love. And thanks to all the anglers that participate every year. But most of all congratulations to Fishdawg who nearly pushed me overboard to grab the rod and yelled at me the whole time I was trying to knock... NET his winning fish. He handled that fish like a seasoned vet and craddled it like a newborn to the live well. After he had a perm-a-grin and suspected wood the rest of the day.

I think Reggie said it best "Even if you had a slow day it was about the most fun anyone can have with the event and the BBQ"
