Making Mylar Tinsel Trolling Flies
I recently bought a three fly twinkie rig and an MC rocket fake herring stripe and started playing around with it. Thos rigs are not cheap and decided to look into making my own rigs. found a fly kit and also order the heads and 2" material and started playing around with it.
I found some online instructions here before I ordered to see how they were made. really simple:
http://www.lakemichiganangler.com/tips/making_flys.htm
This little laker decided the the meat rig I tied with one twinkie fly that included a hook was too much for it to resist. Didn't want a big meal, so the little snack did him in.
After that experiment I decided to tie up some 4" flies with the kit material. The kit did not come with the 3m double sided tape, but any craft store has it.
Trying to show you how I do it. I don't use that much material as I am only trying to mimic a little smelt.
I finish it off with some chartreuse thread from the craft store using the bobbin I used 30 years ago to tie jigs. I rig with 30 pound fluorocarbon 2 beads 1/2 octopus hook & treble stinger.
If you want more body you can fluff the mylar out or turn it around great lakes style, but most people have poor results with great lakes flies locally and the slim profile has been working for me. Hope this gives some guys some ideas to play around with during the slow time coming up.

When you pry yourself away from watching the W Network and get your hot glue gun back from your wife I will show you how it's done.

Bought the fly kit from purple taco. Ran the one I made above and took a laker and salmon off the rigger. Have been running a scotty pinch pad instead of Chamberlin with these. Also did some lakers with peanut fliesThreeBuoys wrote:Did you buy the Fly Kit from the Michigan Angler?

Got the kit from Purple Taco, going to give it a go. I have a couple of Church Tackle Revelators that I tried with other Salmon Flies, took a smaller Laker and a Shaker. Just fun to try something different.
