Was wondering if anyone used flashers and flies on lake champlain for salmon? just a thought

Pretty much almost every trip out... Unless they are hitting spoons hard, flashers and flys get pulled at some point during a trip. They help mix things up and work when spoons don't sometimes...

We typically put just one or two spoons out for insurance. Everything else is flies with dodgers. Of course I tie my own streamers, which explains my boat name. I seem to have the best luck on the black ghost - or a variation on that fly pattern.

this is actually pretty funny to me i have been fly fishing since i was 12, and tying flies for the last 14 years but have never ONCE thought of trolling a fly for salmon on the lake, before i wrote this post. Man the possibities are endless now.

the best fly i have ever used for salmon in the river is a grey ghost, slight variation of the black ghost, never tied a black ghost with the pink over the throat but looks like it would be a good strike enhancer. i do see that you managed to get your hands on real jungle cock eyes though, hard to find i have a couple of saddles here.

How far do you guys run the fly behind the dodger? does anyone us SD's?

I put the fly back about 15 inches from the dodger on a 12 lb test leader, I like the Jensen luhr 000 moocher dodger with chrome over brass coloring. I experiment with other dodger but usually have less luck.

I also tie and fish gray ghost flies with my custom colors-



I call my boat the BlackGhost since the colors are similar. Plus we already have a Gray Ghost forum member.

And yes those are real jungle cock. I like to think that the fish can tell the difference to to justify the costs. A cape cost $80 from Classic Outfitters but makes a lot of flies.

They do look nice to the eye, but I think that streamers don't need to be perfect since they really just need to have the right colors, the right wiggle, and a streamer flow. Then they need to be in the right spot at the right time.

You need to check out the Surprise Flies posted by Randy under the Lure Craft forum. Randy is from the tandem hook camp - but I still admire his flies and frequently run one of his or a facsimile tied by my daughter. I am often as successful with Surprise Flies as I am with the black and gray ghosts.

Ken, what hook size are the pictured flys tied on??

As far as flashers go, Pro troll also makes a small version of the 8" pro-chip we use on Ontario for kings. Its 4" long & works well with streamers 12 to 14" behind it. The have Green, red, & white along with chrome. I have used these along with the lure jensen 000 dodgers. As mentioned....always have a variation of one of thse in the pattern some where....

I use #4 and #2 streamer hooks xxx length. Got those at Classic Outfitters too. I'm not at home so don't have the mustad number.

The pro troll site lists walleye as a target species for the 4" flasher which makes me wonder, anyone here ever troll flies for eyes?

I was reading this post with interest and was hoping for some comment on "peanut" or "skirt" flies like they use in Erie and Ontario. These are not "flies" in the traditional sense and really don't look like anything that most of us would call flies.

Any thoughts?
