Mark,

I just read this story on my Yahoo account. What an incredible fish! My wife and I were lucky enough to catch 4-5 sturgeon on the same river (Fraser river) 10 years ago on my honeymoon in British Columbia. The biggest was 125 lbs. 5.5 ft long the guide told us. A fun fish to catch. Some will jump right out of the water when first hooked. Quite a thrill! We captured the bigger one on video.

125 lb 5 1/2 ft. Fraser river fish July 2002. About 10% of that monster that was caught. Yikes!

Raz,

The guide told us there are 3 major rivers on the West coast that have these native Sturgeon. The Sacremento, Columbia, and Fraser rivers. The interesting thing is the other two U.S. rivers have numerous dams that prevent the Sturgeon from moving freely. The Fraser river has no dams along it's 1,000 mile length and it empties at Vancouver about 50 miles downstream from where we fished at the foothills of the Canadian rockies. These fish can move freely up and down the 1,000 mlles of the Fraser. All fish are returned and tagged by the guides and they cannot be harvested. You hear about the big sturgeon that are caught below the dams on the Columbia and these fish are kind of stuck at the tail races of these dams and are caught hundreds of times by the charters.

Thanks Ron. Beautiful scenery too. I've only seen two in my life time. Once while fishing with a couple fellas in California one of the guys caught a small one about 36", then one time I saw a guy in the Winooski (seven years ago?) that had one in his boat!!! He didn't know what it was and I advised him that he'd better release it right away!!! That one was maybe a four footer.
