I release most all my fish, but the few I have eaten and the bait that has been spit up so far this summer has been mostly alwives.. I did see one smelt mixed in with some alwives earlier in the summer. As a main forage I think smelt may be a thing of the past since the alwives have moved in....

I cleaned a 24 inch Steelie during the LCI that was caught just South of the GI ferry that was packed full of smelt 3 - 4 inches in size, not one alewife in the mix. I did clean a 9 lb laker as well that had 2 cisco in it that were 6 and 8 inches.

I need to use bigger bait....
