Fishing out of Converse 2/24 in the rough

Post by Fishdawg »

Hit the water at Converse about 7am with Dean (Homewrecker) aboard. Headed across to New york in 4 footers from the north (light and variable winds!!????) Thought maybe we could fish our way out of it, but got the word that the fish were in the rough stuff and biting, so into it we headed. As we got into the hot spot area we were seeing salmon jump out of the water around the boat. Fathead, SeaBill and Reggie were already there and having a ball with them. Speedy Shiner lures seemed to be the hottest (silver and rainbow colors), but some Crazy Ivan lures (Frosty and sausage gravy) were also hot ones. Planer boards, lead core and downriggers all did well at times in mostly depths under 50 ft. We went 9 for 12 on salmon, with a couple nice 18/19" fatties, but also some with lampreys and very beat up by lampreys (is NY still doing treatments??). The salmon kings (Reggie and Jeremy) did much better than us, but were nice enough to pass along some of their insight on what the fish wanted. The waves died down a bit by mid afternoon, but still rough. That didnt seem to bother the salmon.

The seas were high, but so was I. The lake was rough, but we were tough. The action was hot, but we were not. Still the Fishdawg was out, and we had fun no dought. :D
