frostbite shore fishing for lakers updated 10/31/2017

Post by fishy1 »

changed my program this morning and decided to target lakers from shore. drove about 15 minutes north to one of my favorite spots. was dissapointed when i got there to find it so shallow. set my 2 rods with certified bait and casted as far as i could and couldnt reach even the 10 foot of water. stayed anyhow as the lake there was alive with big fish surfacing. 9:15 am and still no runs so i decided to go a little furthur north and where there is a little spot with public access. got there and set up the same with no results and fish still surfacing. so i decided to take one rod out and change it to a lure and to spin cast. went to the truck and took a new lure out of the package and tied it on. bang ist cast 25 inch laker that fought like ton. from then on to noon i landed 6 lakers 22 to 27 inches lost 3 and had at least another 6 or 7 hits. all 6 fought harder than all of the lakers i caught in the past. i was fishing 20 to 25 foot of water with a semi rocky bottom

also the biggest laker had a at least 12 inch lamprey on it and it was quickly taken care of. for some reason i couldnt post the pic because it said file limit exceeded. it had to just attach to the laker because there wasnt any hole or even blood on the laker when i released it. kept 2 lakers for one of my bait guys to eat.

Hey Matt, Looks like you had some fun. Does that shore action normally continue until the ice sets up?

i am thinking it does because of the spawn. its my ist time targeting lakers in the fall though. all of the lakers i have caught in the past were in the spring from shore but i never had lakers bust water on me like they did today in the spring. i am usually deer hunting this time of the year.

Glad you got nice catches on the lures. Always fun to have some action at the end of the rod.

Glad to hear it worked out Matt. They are big and active in there shallow in the cold waster, and no barotrauma!

hit the same spot this morning at daylight to see if yesterday was a fluke. i only had a 2 hour window so i needed action fast and it happened. 2nd cast fish on a nice 26 inch laker then 5th cast and fish on and a nice 25 inch laker. then from that 25 inch laker i landed 7 more by 8:30 am when i had to leave including two 28 plus lakers. it was just unbelievable and today nothing surfacing except 2 silvers. i used the same lure with great success. going to add pics soon.

had to keep this 28 inch plus laker that weighed 8 lbs 4 ounces. somehow the line got tangled all around his gills and when he was thrashing in the net it cut one of them and strangled him. one heck of a fight this laker gave me busted water 4 times on me and had to land him in the rocks. Image

8-)
That's pretty cool you can catch Lakers from shore that big. I see them all the time over here in Burlington near the lights but they don't really care for biting. That one 28"er had some marvelous colors too!
