jim: i think your right i think there spawning with the female in the tire and the males guarding it and ready to fertilize the eggs. i didnt think they spawned in the summer but now days you never know.
Fishy:
I believe July & August are actually their prime spawning months. I would probably leave the tires there, at least until September or October and not try to catch the males inside the tires. I doubt that the males will leave the tires to feed until they are finished with their guard duty.

7/3/2016 went out for pan fish ist thing this morning as my son and granddaughter were coming down in his boat . set up in 11 feet of water and caught plenty of white perch yellow perch and sun fish. my son decided to head south to try a spot we used to fish so i told him im going in the middle of the jungle for cat fish and bowfins. set up with 2 cat rods one in front of the boat and one in the back of the boat. 15 minutes there and a run and fish on landed a small but hefty catfish. put another bait on and threw it back out heard a noise behind me and a real strong run and the fish had my net also out of the boat and into the water. this fish was really moving so i suspected a big cat heading for the broad lake now with my net tangled up in the line. set the hook and thought i had the net and fish but coudnt tell because of the jungle weeds. kept pulling and finally got close to the boat and nothing no net. somewhere that net is tangled up on the jungle weeds. pulled anchor and searched for an hour and nothing. decide to go and try cats again without a net. around 11:30 am had a strong run and fish on after a 5 or 6 minute battle with the weeds and catfish got him to the boat and me leaning over trying to hold him and take the hook out was not going to happen as he was highly agitated and he made a run so hard with me holding the line he sliced my finger open with the line. bleeding i said to myself i have to get the hooks out of his mouth so i started pulling the line with two hand and got his head up and reached down and grabbed his side horns and lifted him up and in the boat . i win this battle took the hook out and released this 34 inch catfish. landed one more and then went in to check on the cats in the tires before i went home. there were 5 there. i went back tonight to video them but the males were really spooky but got the females in the tire. what an awsome sight watching these big cats getting ready to spawn in tires. wow.
came home and got a lawn sale net out for now.
here is the cat that woudnt let me take the hook out of his mouth on the side of the boat.

One very, very nice fish.

At 34 inches, wouldn't that qualify for some type of "master" angler award?

7/5/2016 fishing today was slow to say the least. no currents no winds and no movements of pan fish at all in fact no bigger fish even surfacing all morning. did end up with about 20 pan fish keepers for the pan but had to really work for them as most were on the small side.did get a pic of a female catfish spawning and i will post it here. it blended right in with the sand and tire so it is hard to see but there and she is facing the lily pads and her dorsal fin on top. hopefully i get the videos posted in a couple of days . having problems with my videos sending from my phone. spooked the big male that was on top of the tire guarding her.Imageonline photo sharing
here is another female about 20 yards from the other i took this tonight at 8:30 pmImageclick image upload

I really enjoy reading your posts. Amazing when you spend that much time on the water what you might see and catch. I think Reelax might be onto something with perhaps some one putting them there for structure. Especially after Jim quoted reading about them spawning in pails. Any how you should get some good mileage out of this tire story!!!!!! LOL

Nice pix Matt, by leaving those fish alone you are ensuring many more stories of catching Catfish for years to come. Reelax is on to something, I know we used to put old Christmas trees in certain areas of a pond I knew of to attract Crappies, they would use that area to spawn in the spring. It would be nice to replace those tires you took out for more spawning beds but knowing N.Y.S. and their screwed way of thinking they would probably fine you for polluting the lake....And that is the EN-TIRE story (lol).

thanks to all the comments on what i find as amazin as it can get. every day that i go out in my boat i check on them today only the females were there in the tires. when i came back in the two females were still there and they kept circuling the tires inside. they were constantly moving i was right next to them watching them and they dont seem to care. as i was putting the boat up i saw something stirring up the bottom where the cats are walked over and another cat was making the water very muddy there with that clay bottom.

7/6/2016 went out to do some pan fishing and would meet up with another forum member mr. gill (john) . he had his boat and i went out in mine. started out great for the whites and some nice yellows. john wasnt doing that well with the artificials and i was using worms. told john some spots to try since its his ist time here so he moved around all morning. after awhile i started to pick up some big sunfish also and i catching whites yellows and sunnies almost every time i dropped my line in the water. i was very selective in keeping the pan fish and when i left at 11:30 am i had a good mess of sunnies a good mess of yellows and a good mess of whites. john had some fun with the whites and is going back out this evening with worms. john and i will be back at it tommorrow morning. its a good trip for john to get here so it will be a two day trip. i also landed 2 sheephead and 2 bass today. what a difference one day can make. :D

I figure that's how he found the tire. Thought it was a big ole' donut laying on the bottom of the lake and needed to check it out.
