9/22/2016 went back to the same pond this morning at the same spot but a total different day. air temperature was 10 degrees warmer than 9/21 and more humidty so i knew they would be hugging the bottom in the 40 fow. tried the bobber rod anyhow until 8 am but only one bite. the sinker rod had steady action so i decided to fish with just the one rod. started fishing at 6:50 am and no steam coming off the water like 9/21 . every once in a while while casting the sinker rod out i would have a real strong pull on the way down but kept missing it. i am using a 1/4 ounce egg sinker so it takes awhile to hit bottom. happened 3 or 4 times before 8:30 am . once hit bottom i was getting bites steady and landed 10 brookies by 8:30. then it happened a strong hit just before it hit bottom and fish on and a good one. i was thinking brown instantly but was having a tough time lifting it up off bottom and it was just head shaking. somethings wrong here i said to myself but kept working it slowly in and up i finally got to see what was happening in the crystal clear water i had a long stick attached to my line and a big brown trout approx 6 or 8 feet from it. kept lifting the rod tip up as high as i could but the stick got wedged in the rocks and all i could do is hope for the brown to pull it out which he did with lots of head shaking but also twisted the hook out and was on his way to freedom. what a battle with me losing it. got the stick and my sinker and hook back but the hook was bent . sun came over the mtn at 9 am and it got warm so i started casting as far as i could to keep the worm in the deeper water and it worked fish on almost every other cast. ended the morning at 10:30 am landing 27 brook trout from 8 to 11 inches. a fun day on the pond. :D

Sound like a wonderful trout pond. How big is it? Any pic of the pond. I have a trout pond about 2 hours from my house then it's a 2.5 mile hike in. it has only wild native brook trout and if you hit it right in the spring the fly fishing can be very good but the fish are very wild and hard to catch. i get some in the 2 pound range. When your in there it's like being in a remote Canadian Lake.

this pond is actually called a lake. its upper cascade lakes and is right near the road . its located in the high peaks in keene ny. it holds lake trout brookies and browns. only the brookies are stocked. i have no idea how the browns got in there because i checked the stocking list way back and only brookies have been stocked in there. the upper is very deep up to 80 fow. will start going back into the ponds this weekend since its going to cool down. the flesh on these trout in cascades is a dark pink/orange. ill take a couple of pics to post here today. one last thing i hardly ever see a fisherman .

I would say by the vibrant colors the trout you're catching have been in there for some time. if there is a brook coming into the pond go and look to see if the trout are spawning. They spawn around the end of October and if you look at night you can tell better then in the day. Maybe some of the stock fish are reproducing. i hope you can post some pic of some of the male brookes in late october when they are in there full fall colors. Thanks Don&Traci

9/23 2016 hit cascades lake today in the rain and wind and another forum member was going to join me streamer (mike) started fishing at 7:45 am with a strong gusty wind fog and rain and 43 degrees. went with 2 sinker bottom fishing rods today . casted one out as far as i could and the other closer where i have been catching the brookies. ist cast on short rod fish on and then bites steady but kept getting stuck . they would grab the worm and head in towards me in the rocks. this went on until mike got here somewhere around 9 :30 am i think and in the pouring rain. there was a real strong current there to and it was bring my line into the rocks and getting stuck also. mike started casting with a spinner and said he could feel the pressure as he got closer to shore. landed 8 brookies and lost 7 sinkers and hooks. had a bite almost every time and had to hold the rod but had to pull quickly with fear of getting stuck. mike got no hits and my long rod which i had all morning out there no hits.

don there is cascade brook that flows into upper and lower cascade lake and out of lower cascades that goes down the mtn. trout season closes oct 15th in ny so i should be able to get some nice colored males out of there. normally this time of year im back in 1.5 miles to 3.2 miles away from the roads but the warmer weather and the depth of cascades lake is a better bet right now. there is a flow in between upper and lower and i will be sure to check it out. you said it was better at night? hope to catch a nice big male out of their soon.

9/25/2016 headed back into a pond this morning that holds native brook trout. streamer (mike) said he would show up around ten am. after a hike of 25 minutes reached the pond. 39 degrees and steam coming off the water. over one hour with no bites where are normally cast out so i decided to put a sinker on my salmon/steelhead rod and toss it out as far as i could. before it hit bottom ist cast fish on and landed a nice 12 inch female brookie. casted it back out set the rod down and within 5 minutes my line was peeling off the reel at super speed closed the bail and fish on i land a nice 14 inch male brookie. tried to get my other rod out there but couldnt . that rod was set in the skunk weed. ugh. from 8:30 am to 10 am action was steady on the salmon/steelhead rod. after 10 am it slowed but still missed 3. this pond only holds native brookies and they naturally reproduce in it. i landed 7 nice brookies on that salmon/steelhead rod and my worm rod 0. its the ist time on this pond i have thrown out that far as most of the time brookies feed 20 yards or less near shore. took some pics of these beautiful brookies. mike finally showed up on my way at 11:20 am. he went bushwhacking off the trail and after seeing me on the other end of the pond. all brookies were from 11 inches to 14 inches.
here is what the pond looked like at 7 am.

"Wow" look at the colors on those trout. You have some good trout ponds Fishy when you can catch natives like that. you pic are wonderful the fog on the pond and the fish on the rock. The white on the fins are getting as white as Ivory. For me I can say without a doubt the Brook trout is buy far the prettiest fish in New England. Thanks for your post Fishy

Makes me sad that I'll be missing my Maine trip 2 years in a row. We did 40 in an evening on a backwoods pond, my host and guide 30, me 10 , on the fly.

9/26/2016 and 9/27/2016 update. 9/26 met wayne up the cascade lake for some trout fishing. started slow as i got 4 pumpkinseeds right off? wayne and i couldnt beleive it 40 ft of water and they wernt much bigger than 3 inches . air temperature was 32 degrees and a heavy frost there. fished 4 hours with wayne catching 2 brookies and me 0 and lots of lost sinkers and hooks. it almost like someone threw something in that area on the bottom.
9/27 went into a pond today that holds brookies about .4 miles off the road. air temperature was 57 degrees to warm so i stayed closer to the road. set up a bobber rod and a sinker rod with dillies. ist cast on sinker a strong run and a miss it cleaned my dillie. then a few bites here and there but nothing on the bobber saw at least 5 nice brookies bust water earlier but nothing later. fished until it got to warm and headed out. landed 1 nice 12 inch brookie i released and had several bites but come up empty. only 1 bobber down though and a miss. a tough 2 days of fishing .

9/29/2016 headed for cascade lakes early this morning only to get their and have a very strong wind. decided to hit another pond a little south that holds brookies and rainbows. started fishing around 8 am left my phone in the car since there was no service there. air temperature was 45 degrees with a north wind. set out 2 rods with sinkers since the bobber wasnt going to work with the wind. about 1 hour later or less i saw something splashing coming towards me. what i was about to see was a shock to say the least it was a girl swimming across the pond. 60 fow and 45 degrees a girl is swimming. fished another hour or so and only 2 bites and missed them both.
