Savage Island Sunday 09/25

Post by fishmaster176 »

My wife and I spent from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm fishing the east side of Savage Island and of course, I got outfished something awful. We started out casting for bass and she nailed a 3 lb. 10oz. SM and about a half hour later she hooked a 5 lb. 10 oz. Northern. Hope the pics work. We were using Mepps Aglia red/white #4 dressed bucktail. Hard to break old habits. Been using those lures since 1969 and still love 'em. My wife has been convinced. So, after a major whuppin' in the warm fish dept., we switched to the riggers. Caught a few perch, but it felt good to get some time in. We're only running 2 lines, so it won't get too crazy.
I don't want to open a can of worms, but what do you guys run for releases? I've seen the rubber band setup and it looks pretty simple. I have OffShore Tackle mediums and they seem very stiff. I also bought a couple of Cannon adjustables with the dial on the side. I tried those today and if I set it so it doesn't release on the descent then it won't release for the small guys. I was hoping my first report would include something good on my part, but not this time other than to say I've got a very happy wife and that makes for a very happy Hubby.

That SM is hugh!!! Try blacks or chamberlain releases... They are simple and work great.

Very nice fish...well done!

I use Roemers or chamberlains. I don't have any blacks but have used them and they are great releases.
I actually like pinch pad releases on top when stacking.
Catch and serve with lemon.

That's a couple nice fish, congrats!! Sounds like heading over to Savage Island has paid off. I used the Cannon releases for a few seasons. They are tough to dial in as far as pad pressure goes but they do work. We switched to Roemer's a couple years ago and there's no going back, they have way less abrasion on the line and fewer false trips.

Thanks gang for the good words and release advice. I ordered the Chamberlain releases and the stackers. They look easy to use and I like the auto slide feature on the stacker. They're also Made In Vermont. My wife hasn't stopped smiling. You guys have boosted her ego and confidence to new levels. That IS a good thing. She's a very good fisherman and gives me all the credit for her expertise. I've shown her a lot, but she is a natural. She puts up with me, so the least I can do is take her fishing and "let" her catch the big ones. LOL!!!

I should have mentioned I'm not real crazy about the chamberlain stacker... but I like the non-stacker version.
Catch and serve with lemon.
