Dropped the hammer on my second bird this morning. The first one had a disease (Avian Pox) so the USDA took the carcass for testing but said the meat was ok to eat...... It was a 15lb two year old with a terrible beard and no spurs because it was sick.
This is the one from today. 17lbs 13oz, 9 1/2" beard and 7/8 spurs. Great hunt with birds all over us most of the morning.
No its something new this year in VT according to the USDA that took the carcass for testing and also one of my buddys shot one with the same disease but it was on the head of the Turkey. Here is a picture of his bird.
Gooseman congrats on the birds!!!! I have a friend that ownes a dairy farm in Danville. Both he and I have felt for years that eventually there would be health problems with turkeys!! His concern are not with turkeys per say but the health of his cows!! The turkey feed and also sh#t in the same feed as the cows!! I guess we will see where this goes ?? Hopefully this wont be a major issue!! In the meantime again congrats !!!! Hopefully more in the fall !!! Sleeps
Gerry, I really don't think Im comfortable eating it. Im not a fan of wasting something I harvest but in this case, I think Ill replace it with a Butterball.
Sleeps, your friends farm isn't on Mack Mtn. road is it? If so Ive taken a fair number of fall turkeys there. Thanks to all for the congrats.
