We launched out of Converse at 9 this morning and I started setting lines on the south side of Garden Island. As I was setting my fourth rod my port rigger tripped and we boated a 13-15” salmon. Great start! No sooner than I finally got all four rods set a diver fired and aboard came another sub legal salmon. And another. And another. We found a whole herd of them! Not wanting to terrorize the little duffers anymore we decided to move to the west side, and all swam away seemingly unscathed. We set lines at Split Rock and trolled south and picked up a few lakers under 5# and ANOTHER salmon smolt. I decided to go against my better judgement and dumped my lines another 15’ right on top of the big marks on the fish machine in what I figured would be the middle of the grease pit and 2 minutes later we had a VERY acrobatic 22” salmon on that jumped 5-6 times and my mate caught it in the air in the net on its last jump at the back of the boat. She’s deadly with the net when she gets it swinging….
We continued south and we picked up a big fat greaser as a large barge with a crane went by and another 20” or so salmon.
All told we caught just shy of a dozen salmon smolt, 5 lakers and 2 legal salmon. The one we kept was chucked full of alewives. The bite was at 55’, silver and blue and silver and chartreuse were the winning colors, and again we trolled a little faster than normal at 3.0-3.2 SOG.
Another great day on the water
