It's been a weird year for me for sure. I started off in Westport in early to mid may and marked lots of bait and found fish in 25-50'. The following weekend I went to Port Douglas and didn't mark much of anything in the way of fish or bait. A week or two later Westport was dead and I haven't been back since. I'm vertical jigging so I'm not seeing as much water as the guys trolling all day but in the spots I've done well the past two springs I've struggled. I have managed at least one 28" plus fish each trip but numbers haven't been good. Hoping to head up this weekend and find some fish deep after this week.

Caught one big laker today and a few very small ones trolling. I would fish 80-100’ of water just off the bottom. Let us know how you do because the lakers are few and far between Cole island and into Westport.

Friends don't let friends troll

Had a great day Sunday out of Port Douglas. Landed on fish within 50' of starting to scout, hit spotlock and had constant action until about 10AM and then decent until i moved around 1PM. Caught a few more on the way in and left around 4. Back at it Monday and it was the complete opposite. Marked way fewer fish and only caught 3 versus 30 plus on Sunday. On a bright note all of the fish Sunday were big fat healthy fish.

My Dad trolled last Thursday from Westport up to Split Rock and said the fleas were bad. They were enough to foul the gear and trip releases. They had times where they couldn't reel the line through the guides as they were so heavy. He's not rigged to deal with them but just giving you a heads up so that maybe you willed be rigged up to mitigate them if trolling. He ended up trolling Friday at Schroon and picked up a few nice salmon there.
Take a kid fishing!
