Westport-Tuesday am

Post by Pcraft237 »

Headed out at 7 to Split Rock area. Hi Set up 2 riggers with cheaters. Anywhere from 40-50 ft found 50-55 degrees. Started picking up small lakers, all of them with no fins clipped. 6 total.
Then a rod shook and released. 100 ft back a salmon came a good 2 ft out of water. No 18 incher. Thought I lost it a couple times as it ran toward boat. 20 ft out it started the aerial show. Fishing solo so steering boat, grabbing net, trying to get this fish within net range.Of course it crossed other line. Drop net, clear line.grab net and get it under fish. Can’t get much better. Best salmon of season for me. It had an old lamprey wound on opposite side, so decided to release it.
Pink lure took 2-3 of the lakers. The others on the spoon the salmon hit.

Great report. I can feel the excitement just reading it and imagining seeing the fish jump 2 feet, wondering if its still hooked as its swimming toward the boat, then it explodes out of the water ! Nice work with the net solo !
I do not exaggerate when I talk about fishing - I underestimate, like I say "just one more cast honey, then I'll come home" !
Keep Calm and... Fish On !

I stand corrected, it is a steelhead. Caught a smaller one a few weeks ago, it had distinctive pink down the sides. Not on this one. It was a fun fish, kept boat in gear, cut throttle, at one point fish swam toward boat and was getting ahead of boat.

No wonder it jumped so much. Great chunk of steel!!! Much more rare than a salmon. We get 20-30 salmon per steelhead or more… only thing more rare this season are brown trout:(

Thanks for the report!! Loved the fight details!!

Thanks everyone, after 6 small lakers this fish was a perfect ending for a morning trip.
