First time on Champlain

Post by rfern77 »

First post here so hello everyone!! Also, last Friday the 17th was my first time out on Champlain laker fishing , with my own boat and gear anyways. (Took a charter about 10 years ago.) Anyways, fairly new to the trolling thing but know enough to get into trouble. Pushed off out of Westport at about 6:30am with a good stiff East wind causing some 3’ rollers out there which really made me question my decision to head out. Set up with 2 downriggers on the south side of the bay a few hundred yards off shore right around Barber Point (I think)? Wasn’t marking many fish. Nothing fancy, just a Crazy Ivan watermelon pumpkin on one and a Speedy Shiner in brown trout on the other, no dodgers or flashers, etc. Set up at 30 and 60 feet down in anywhere to 100-150 fow . Surface temps were right around 63 degrees. Had them at 50 and 100 ft behind the boat and at about 8:30 the action started and didn’t end until I had to reluctantly depart due to prior obligations. Went 7-8 with lakers , mostly average size and 1 which was a personal best for me at 9.8 lbs. Also lost about a 20” salmon about 10ft from the boat after its 3rd leap! All in all it’s was an awesome first trip and am now eagerly anticipating my next trip chasing monsters!!!

Careful... It becomes addictive! Lakers are everywhere this year, but sounds like you had a good day in sporty conditions! Welcome to the Forum!

Looks like a great set up. I would remove those two chairs, I have practically the same setup and those chairs just live in the basement......lol

Yes Sir! :) :D
Loving the personal best on the first day out in your boat, that's got to mean something.

And your 20" salmon lost, is a lot better than some of us done in the past month.

Looks like you got yourself set up really nice, enjoy the lake and be safe. Congrats on the PB, the boat and welcome to the club for sure.

Welcome Aboard !

Westport / Barber Point is a great area for trolling !
I do not exaggerate when I talk about fishing - I underestimate, like I say "just one more cast honey, then I'll come home" !
Keep Calm and... Fish On !
