Post by jthurs »

hey guys. been fishing out of the Winooski for lakers and have had slot of fun with that. Have talked to some guys that occasionally hooked some nice eyes fishing for lakers and I would like to try to target them. Should I be fishing at night? Is this a good enough are a to spend some time or should I look elsewhere? Also when is a good time of year to find them shallow, I love fishing inn early may for lakers. Thanks for any help.

I think late May-early April the eyes start coming into the rivers to spawn depending on water temps. Don't know much about their spawning rituals but maybe they setup outside of the mouth prior to running up?

Keep in mind that the season closes this week on for Walleye. Also, not only is it very unethical to target game fish out of season while they prep for spawning it is ILLEGAL.

The walleyes that went in the rivers now many come out of the rivers by May...... The winooski is great for walleyes if you can figure them out :D

The SM up North are pigs. From Appletree to the Swanton bridge I have caught many 5-6lbers. All being incidentals while trolling for Walleye but still a good fight. Rarely do I venture on the West side of the islands but the Inland sea seems to hold a great number of big SM. Don't rule out Mallets bay.

They hang in the deep stuff until July sometimes, weather permitting. I've caught them in water in the mid 70's. Tricky fish indeed...

I fish Mallets Bay, North to the Inland Sea to St Albans bay, the gut and keeler bay for bass. There are definitely some hog smallies in these parts. You wont be disappointed.

There walleye in the Inland sea too. :D

I've done well for big SM in the 3-5# range at the gut, the I.S. from Georgia Shore up thru St. Albans Bay and Maquam Shore. Also nice along the old rail causway on outer Mallet's near Allen Point over to Colchester.
Also done very well on big SM in the Lamoille near the highbridge on Arrowhead.
Can get very nice LM at the sandbar, Mallett's and even out at Allen Point.
