running for silvers.... away from lightning..

Post by Reelax »

Launched on the southern Lake on Tuesday with Travis and DA aboard to start the search for silver. This time of year nothing is a given so we figured we may have to work to find them..
Once the boat was in the water a large thunder head worked across the lake and to the south right overnight us. We decided to sit in truck for 1/2 hr before launching to let it pass. Well it did finally pass and we launched... But 2-3 more systems passed by during the day making it interesting for us and limiting the areas we were able to fish as we spent half the morning running to safer water... we picked at small Lakers and salmon most of the morning, around mid day we got into a couple sets of doubles and had some good action. On purple and pink spoons with silver backs... We couldn’t move back over our last set of doubles again due to a storm also going goin that direction... That made it frustrating cause when Reelax gets good numbers going it’s usually after finding a specific hot spot like that location we had double pigs on....The secret is to hit that pod of fish hard until they say uncle... not happening today..

We feasted on marinated jerk venison back strap for breakfast followed by bacon wrapped scallops bbqed for crispness and broiled in butter and lemon slices for taste. OMG I love it when Travis brings scallops!

Something about scallops and bacon on your hands, lines set right after always seem to fire with nice salmon. Hmmm ... we may have to do this every trip.. ;)

We ran 3 riggers down 45-100 and 2 slide divers down around 60 with. Lead core with clip diver out the side to cover 35 down... had blades on 2 of 3 riggers as I seldomly go stealth. BLING is always loaded in Reelax.... gotta look lik a bait ball right? Best salmon came from 75 feet down.. Thermocline was variable between 60 down and 85 down depending on area!

All in all it was a very enjoyable day and we were all beat when we put the boat on the trailer around 3pm. The counter was into double Digits at the end, we worked hard for every fish.... we may have been able to double our numbers but the elec storm limited the areas we could return to for, follow up strikes, so it made the day challenging...

Very few boats out today only saw 2 fishing boats all day...

Thanks for the great times and memories guys! :D

Always fun on the pond.

Here is a link to a video from one of the salmon. It was a double left over once Dave’s made a mess in all our gear :?

Great report, Matt, even though you couldn't go everywhere you wanted to! We did that last year up by Shelburne, running north or south to avoid storms that were rolling through. Makes it interesting!

Quick question ..... How far do run your lures behind your "bling"?

What a great time on the lake indeed. We could of had a day could we have spun on that spot where we lost fish, but it was great to see a nice fish jump several times, even if it did cross lines

Setbacks today were anywhere from 4 feet to 40 but always a fixed cheater right above the release matching the bling. Fish were coming off both main lines and cheaters, i think the one i lost was on the cheater, but the one Matt got was on the main line so tough saying what works best.

Till next time

Thanks alot, DA! Appreciate the info. Typically when I run blades, I run the main line 5-10ft behind the bling. I'll try your technique with the fixed cheater next time. Thanks again

Gotta give credit where credit is due.... fishing with Crazy Ivan produced the fixed cheater right above the bling set..... Reelax has just adopted that intel and has reaped the bennies for over a year now... If you ever get a chance to fish with Todd... DONT pass it up!!!

Well, that intel ALMOST worked last night! Had just gotten set up and was organizing tackle when I looked over at my rods and the bottom rod (set just above some small horizontal blades with a cheater 3ft above the blades) was bent over more than how I'd set it and thumping good. Unfortunately it came off before I could grab the rod. Ended the evening with my son catching 2 salmon on 1 rod (10" shaker on cheater and 16"er on main line) and missed a few others. Beautiful night on the water and had a nice swim, so it didn't matter if the fish wanted to cooperate or not! I'm going to have to look into getting some vertical blades, as I'm sure that's what you guys are running.

Thanks again for the tips! Hopefully I can make it work next time.

Awesome report! Wicked cool pictures! Love the one with the black clouds behind the boat! Always fun to read your reports and makes me want to get back after the silver fish. How are you guys fixing your fixed cheaters? I’ve been playing with it and I seem to make a mess every time.

You can half-hitch a rubber band to your main line and then run your cheater through the loop in the rubber band and connect it to the main line. The rubber band will keep your cheater there.

Or, you can get some cheater clips from Ramel in Morrisville at "The Old Fishing Hole". They are large snaps with plastic molded in them. The plastic grips your line and holds it in place. That's what I've been using for a couple of years now and they work great. Which reminds me .... I need to pick up some more soon.

Not at all in favor of using rubber bands. They break and pollute when dropped in the water. They might look like a worm to fish who would swallow and die from it.
I mostly use sliding clips as they will position themselves automatically in the middle between the downrigger release clip and top of water.
For fixed clips I use use Elberta Clip'er. Very easy to use and they hold tight to the main line.

Thanks for posting the pic Gerry.. Those clippers are what I use and I am running low... Is there a good place to buy them??? The grey ones can lock as either slider or fixed. The white ones run only fixed... (Get Grey)

You know Matt. The fleas werent that bad. I am now using at least 30lb for all my riggers and they dont stick to slide diver lines or lead core sets
as bad a rigger lines. So... The fleas didn't collect as bad as last trip with the current lake conditions...
