Copper Depth

Post by keithm87 »

I picked up a couple copper rigs this winter, I am trying to determine if they have too much copper for my application. I would like to run them with my yeck dodger and spin n glo to get a setup out away from the boat since I find the spin n glo setups to be less effective when I run 2. Everything I am finding says that copper is around 30-35ft per 100, but I imagine that is pulling spoons not an 8 inch dodger and 1 3/8 piece of foam. The coppers are 450 setups, and I have thought of taking 100 off one and 150 off the other and rigging the removed line on an additional reel segmented with a small section of braid so I would have a 100, 250, 300, and 350. but if the 450 wont be hanging bottom when I fish 100ish FOW then I would likely leave one that way for deep fishing. I know I saw a post from someone about "Mining lakers" with copper and spin doctor? a couple years back (maybe Harry?) just looking for insight from anyone who may have put a paddle or dodger behind a copper as to what they saw for depths per 100 out.

I don’t know where you got 35-40’ from I use Bloodruns numbers of 22’ per 100 at 2.2 mph ie 500’ gets 110’ down I run 100’ coppers on Champlain and they held true last weekend as long as I stayed deeper than 25’ they were clean I like the short coppers as 100’ of line out gets twice the depth of a 3 color core

I will use them for lakers, and from what I have found online (Great lakes angler charts, as well as charts on some charter sites, and reading discussions on LOU, GLA, and other places) 45lb at 1.8-2.0 will go around 35. Maybe not 40, but even blood run has a difference of 7.5ft per 100 at 2.0 vs 2.2, and I would generally be under 2.0. Guess the only way to know for sure is to head to a flat that is 120 and let it out and see when it drags.

Keith, I use walleye copper also and love it. I run a 35' and 50' setup for early spring fishing and run 250' in the early summer. I like it because it is thin and I don't need a giant reel to hold the length of copper I want to run. The depth chart listed on Blood Run Tackle's web site says at a speed of 1.5, it will run 7ft deep for 10ft of copper, 9 ft at 20, and on up to 90 ft at 300 ft of wire. At a speed of 2, it will run 2 ft at 10, 10 ft at 50, 25 ft at 100, and 65 ft at 300.
