QC Pike River Lamprey Efforts

Post by DreamWeaver »

This is the follow-up article to the exchanges under the cormorant subject, but for lamprey eel control on the Pike River in Quebec.
I have provided a summarized translation of the attached article.

A mechanical structure was designed and built back in 2014 on the Pike River to capture lamprey eels.
Since its installation in 2014, 592 lamprey eels have been caught, and as of the the attached article written in June 2018, they had already caught 40.

The lamprey eels are then given to the University of Montreal where they are studied for further understanding and potential control methods. It is step in the right direction.

As governments tend to be slowed down by bureaucracy and in today's world populism, I would suggest the opportunity is establishing communication between the institutions that are studying the lamprey eels.

Thanks for sharing the article Paul.
Glad to see Quebec is doing his share to control the lamprey.

All the money to build the barrier on the Morpion stream was finance by the Vt fish & Wildlife and this was a lot of money and a lot more that it was suppose to cost has usually in QUEBEC, costs all always more then it was plan.
But good thing it’s working now.

Interesting, for what I've gathered over the years is that Quebec really has a good handle on their fisheries.
They go above and beyond.

Well we need to clear a few things up here. First the lamprey barrier was built with federal great lakes fishery money. Vermont F&W did not pay for it. Second the lamprey barrier is built on the Morpion river just above where it intersects with the Pike. Above this confluence there is a dam upstream on the pike. There is plenty of spawning habitat below the confluence and also up to the dam on the Pike. The only way to control lampreys effectively is to treat with TFM which the Quebec gov. steadfastly refuses to allow. They will not even allow our feds to conduct population surveys there. I am not about to give the Quebec gov credit for anything since they have impaired all efforts to treat. Its also interesting that treatments occur on Ontario tribs to lake Ontario with no problems.

Glad to read that we all have a great interest in better lamprey control, and as we research, report and improve the information, it will lead to more of us becoming involved (on both sides of the border).
As a Canadian neighbor, I will continue to seek out information and opportunity to get more support from our government ministries.
