fishing for catfish and bowfins + pan fish updated 10/20/2016

Saw a guy catch a similar sized eel at the PH town dock saturday.

i dont mind catching them on shore but i wont put one in my boat.

took a couple of days off will hit the lake again in the morning with a target of sheephead early and pan fish then go in shallow for cats to finish the morning.

8/2/2016 set anchors in at 6:40 am in 12 fow with a grass bottom hoping to get into the pan fish and sheepheads. i have a acurite fishing/hunting barometer weather and more in my house and check it every morning to plan my morning fishing. this is really an accurate guage to go by since i have been using it for two years thanks to my son and daughter-in-law a christmas gift. it read excellent fishing today with the bar almost 3/4 of the way. so this is why i decided to head out in 12 fow and and target multiple species. only using one rod my worm rod and dropped down and fish on a good size bluegill . a steady bite for gills and then at 7:15 a, big fish on landed a nice catfish that fought a ton on the spinning rod since it bit right under the boat. released it put a worm on and another big fish on a sheephead. a great start and it paid to listen to my accurite. the bite just continued right until i stopped fishing at 10:30 am to go in and target catfish. here is what i landed today 5 catfish 3 sheephead 4 bullhead 7 bass and kept and filleted 76 pan fish. i forgot the pickeral and 3 golden shiners. what a morning almost every drop under the boat i had a bite. most of the cats and sheephead were on the small side but fun to catch and all were caught on worms. didnt last long for catfish was to hot and decided to go home. went back tonight for 2 hours in 2 fow and had 2 runs and both were dropped.

this morning it says great fishing again so im going to try and head out there again only a different area with more grass. depending on the wind ill set anchors 100 yards of where i was yesterday.

8/3/2016 went out searching for more grassy bottom and found it approx 125 yards north of where i was anchored yesterday. set anchors at 6:30 am dropped my worm rod down and fish on a nice 15 inch bass. dropped back down and fish on another bass approx 13 inches. dropped back down and had a real downward hit and a miss. then i got into some nice gills and yellows . then at 6:55 am couldnt get a bite when suddenly my rod doubled and the tip right into the side of the boat and it came off . attached to my straightened out hook was 2 scales from the fish. they were silver and perfectly round and 1 and 1/4 inches. huge scales on that huge fish. will fill you in more on this fish later. the yellows started biting again and gills to. caught some more bass 11 total and 2 sheephead .decided to pull anchor at 10 am and go in for cats near shore. started pulling up the back anchor and noticed my green line wrapped around the anchor cant be since i have my rods in the boat. wrapped the line around my hand and kept pulling up the anchor and there was my anchor and my shimano rod and reel i lost to a fish 2 weeks. ago. the line was broke off but the reel and rod worked fine. i just sat there thinking could that have been the same fish this morning that took my rod and reel for a swim. the way the line was wrapped around the anchor rope was just like he was still on and grabbed my crawler since the worm wasnt 2 feet from the back anchor and broke it off then? ill never know but that beast is on my list to be targeted again since he seems to be in that one area. just glad to get my rod and reel back for now never thought i would ever see it again. filleted 31 yellow perch and 29 sunnies today and was very selective.

8/4/2016 with an update on 8/3/2016 evening fishing for catfish. set anchors at 6:15 pm and pulled anchors at 8 pm had 4 runs all bowfins landed 2 missed 2.
this morning at 6:15 am set out for some pan fishing with one foot waves to start but got out there and set anchors at 6:40 am the wind was getting gusty and i knew if i could hold anchors i would still take a pounding. fished until 10 am then decided to go in the jungle and fish catfish where the water was calm out of the wind. kept 50 yellows and sunnies for filleting and 10 whites. landed 8 small bass and one small sheephead. fished for catfish until 11 am and went home. had one run and a drop.
here is a pic of the vegetation i look for when fishing for pan fish . they seem to hide in this the end of july and august. if you can find this kind of vegetation on bottom try it you will be surprised what you will catch.
