'10 shootout scouting trip #1

Post by Reelax »

Well, the wind seemed like it was supposed to be out of the north west, and somewhere below 20mph, so Randy
(Captain of Heijac) and I decided to sneek out to try and another shootout scouting run.... We hit the launch at about 10:30am with 3 trailers in the lot, one looked to be the Famous Super Cab.....

The bay looked so flat, we both had smiles from ear to ear... That was short lived, by the time we got out past Gardiners, we saw the reality. 2-3 footers and a 15-20+mph north east? wind... Not to let that spoil our game plan we decided to head for the middle of Whalon's and turn north to setup if we could... By the time we got over there, south seemed to be a much better choice :o

As we setup, we were glad to see a couple of boats in sight, and
the one to our south looked to be bouncing heavy.. Seemed we could see the keel as much or more than the top as it approached. Once we got beside him, it was SuperCab in all his glory, running solo, pointing straight down to where he had just
hauled in mutiple silvers one after another... As he passed us on his nothern motor run, he looked very happy, even though the conditions looked a little like Deadliest Catch.... (gotta love a hard core fisherman)

We did have one release with no one home before we got below split rock, and decided to keep on going south, as turning into the wind wasn't much of an option...

It was very slow, with minumal bait marked all the way down to the Palisades... I think we got 2 cisco, 2 perch and a small salmon on that pass... We were fishing 20-60 feet deep over 140-310fow and switching up colors and setups between riggers and slide divers. Ran some streamers behind dodgers on the riggers to mix things up when the action was slow also..... Even ran some lead core to mix it up some more...

Headed back North to Whalons after about 1:30pm when things started to settle a little... Marked much more bait, some as high up as 30ft, and lot around 60fow over 200-300FOW in Whalons
and started to work some releases oncwe we got setup there... Caught a nice healty laker at 55 for over 300 fow on a rainbow honeybee #1. Then mixed in a couple of salmon, one of which we had to keep due to some blood.

Around 4pm we trolled across the abyss toward thompson's for some scouting... Started marking better bait right off the point and had a couple of releases.. One was this little laker that Randy pulled in... It came on the lead core with only 2 colors out over 200fow..?

After stripping him of the blood sucking snake, he was released to grow up a little...

All in all, I think we boated 5 salmon, 2 lakers, 2 cisco's and 2 perch.... Nothing to write home about, but we got to see lots of water and found a little action in some spots... Mostly the water temp was 58-59deg, and there was no real color/lure style winner today...

Another good outting on Heijac with Captain Randy... Hope to do it again before it is "on" Nov 6th...

Tight lines all!
