7hr search for 1hr of bliss

Launched at 1st light Sat with high hopes, Jason and Dave (wdnr) on board.... we must have lost high hopes some where on the way south cause the same program as last week on the “hot spot” had yielded only marginal lakers and a 12” trophy yellow perch by 9am... this is why I love salmon fishing so much... the hunt is on...
Sun was high, bait was low and the bite was slow...
we searched many miles... zigzagging
To find active bait high in the water column. The profile looked nothing like last week.
After talking to Bearcat and a few other boats, it was evident the fleet was seeing the same.
We trolled north, south and west in the main area but never found great fishing.
We did get a flurry of action by cooking cheese burgers and later on a marinated pork loin on the grill.....
We had to drop Dave By 1pm at the dock, so we decided to troll across the abyss to vt side and see what the bait looked like there while the pork loin cooked..
Well as soon as we got the the vt side and into 150ft of water the bait looked more dense and active on the screen. We found the promise land! As we worked into 90fow it got even better!
Bam rod fires.... Jason boats a
Steel head!
Next, we got a jumper out back.... I grab the rod and the fish jumps again... silver!!! After a nice battle we slip the net under a meduim lake trout!? Yes, I’m disappointed in species but impressed by his fight all at once...
I have never seen a lake trout jump full body out of lake in 2 jumps...
Then.... wack a rod fireps and Jason is on the best salmon of the day...
Then as we are resetting a rod fires and starts dumping line, Jason being the main guest gets that
One too;) HUGE fish,,, pulls
Like weeds... and boy they were bad in spots today:(
But this turns out to be mammoth laker over 14lbs... quick picture and return the beast to the colder depths... Jason’s personal best laker and his fist would have fit right in its mouth the head was sooo big...
Time check... 1235... 6 rod set pull and run to dock got us right to truck by 1pm...
At least we found a new spot that may work in different conditions... on this trip.... the action at the end was amazing;) woulda been a hell of a day if we had started there;)
