Lake trout jigging outside Converse Bay July 17

Post by pnutbutter »

Jigged for lake trout outside Converse Bay on Saturday morning, 8:00-10:30. Breeze was calm, sky was overcast. I worked along the 60-100 feet deep plateau just north of the mouth of Converse Bay. Bounced white and silver plastic tubes and swimbaits on the bottom, also tried a large chrome spoon jigged on the bottom. Didn't see any bottom-hugging fish on the fish finder, but I've heard from members of this forum that lake trout on the bottom may not show up on a fish finder. Saw a few other boats in the same area, some appeared to be trolling, some appeared to be jigging.

This is my second time trying for lake trout and my first time trying this method. I'm all ears if anyone wants to share their wisdom!

We were there Saturday trolling I bet you probably saw us. They were there on bottom we landed over 20 fish between 7:30 and 10 there. Bouncing bottom with our downriggers and pulling big spoons. Cow bells with stick baits behind them work well too! THINK SLOWWWWW for lakers, we were keeping our gps speed between 1.5-1.9. Don’t give up on them they are there and once you figure out what works for you, you will slay them!

I fished around the Charlotte ferry landing area for a few hours Saturday. Picked up 6 lakers trolling, lost 2 about 70 ft down, temps 50-55, in water from 80-150ft.
Tried jigging a few times when I marked a few bottom fish but couldn’t get any hits.
Caught my smallest laker ever.

I’ve been switching from trolling to jigging as water warms and lakers drop to bottom. With manual downriggers it’s a lot easier. And everyone gets a pole, no taking turns.
The flat lures are Luhr Jensen crippled herring 1-2 ounce. They catch a lot of fish. The funny looking thing with pink I got at Basspro saltwater section in Fl. Along with the jigheads and paddle tail minnow and the tube jugs. Al of them have taken lakers.
