Are these both salmon or is one a brown?

Post by Big Bear »

Caught these guys last night. Thinking the one with more speckles on the bottom (2.2lbs) is a younger salmon and the one with fewer speckles on top (2.6lbs) is an older one? What do folks think? The top fish rocketed to the surface immediately after hitting the down rigger and danced all the way in with multiple runs as it got close to the boat.

Thanks!

Look like salmon to me. Salmon tail fins have that v shape, browns have a more vertical profile when swimming through the water horizontally, not much notch if any.

Nice catch.

Top fish is definitely a LLS. To me, bottom fish looks like a steelhead, with spotted tail and iridescent body.

Thank you for all the responses! Seems like they are both salmon maybe in different parts of their life cycle and maybe from different areas of the lake, even though I caught them both the same place. Almost every salmon that I have caught this year has been off a sliding cheater. This one from yesterday hit it and then zoomed to the surface immediately so I then had to reel like crazy to get the cheater all the way back down.

Both are salmon. That's the beauty of Landlocks in spot patterns. Some are loaded, and some have very few. All depends on their parents.
