Karl, the Ancient Mariner, and I did a Pre-fish / meet & greet fishing trip yesterday afternoon. We launched at Converse on a beautiful afternoon. Started the trip off with a ~5lber that fought hard and jumped once. That got the adrenaline going. Worked that spot a couple more times and picked up a smaller fish, as well, on the same spoon. Trolled around for 3 more hours and couldn't get another bite. The water on the surface was 52-55deg. We generally worked the top 15 - 20' of the water column with a combo of riggers, stickbaits on longlines and 1-2 color leadcore.
Here's the 5lber. Yes, this laker JUMPED! Never seen that before. Had us confused as to what it was for a while.
I had a blast fishing with Karl in his Sea Nymph GLS. He's got a very comfortable fishing rig. The auto-pilot is sweet, too! We learned a lot about the current water conditions and we have a program in mind for the DYP. All we can do now is give it our best shot!
Oh, the menu for our evening cruise was Chex Mix and a couple of sodas.
See you next Saturday, Karl!

Nice laker. It's got some nasty lamprey kisses.

A jumping fish must have got you blood pumping even if it turned out to be a laker! They do fight hard this time of the year. It is always treat seeing another boat set up too. Thanks for sharing your adventure for those of us who can't make it out on the water.

Awesome that you were able to hook up with your DYP partner. It's really a great idea for a Derby! I am looking forward to it. I fished the Winni Derby this past weekend and my DYP partner was also fishing the Lake. We didn't get to meet in Person, but he got ahold of me and we exchanged some Intel. He had some great knowledge of the Lake and was extremely helpful in trying to put me on the fish.
I agree with the previous comments as well! Looking forward to meeting all of you!
